Then, Ananda approached the place where the Blessed One was. Having approached, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ananda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this that is spoken of as 'existence,' what kind of expression is this 'existence, existence'?" Ananda, there are three kinds of existence: existence in the realm of desire, existence in the realm of form, and existence in the realm of the formless. Ananda, if there is no action that corresponds perfectly with desire, would anything be designated as existence in the realm of desire?" "Venerable sir, no." Ananda, the field of action, the moisture of existence, the seed of consciousness, and the darkness of ignorance—Ananda, for those beings who have become deluded, consciousness abides in an inferior mind, just like in the craving for desire. Ananda, if there is no action that corresponds perfectly with form, would anything be designated as existence in the realm of form?" "Venerable sir, no." Ananda, the field of action, the moisture of craving, consciousness is the seed, and ignorance is the darkness—for those beings who have become completely deluded, consciousness abides in a thinking mind, just like in existence in the realm of form. Ananda, if there is no action that corresponds perfectly with the formless, would anything be designated as existence in the realm of the formless?" "Venerable sir, no." Ananda, the field of action, the moisture of craving, the seed of consciousness, and the darkness of ignorance—for those beings who have become completely deluded, consciousness abides in a supreme mind, just like in the craving for the formless. Why is that? Ananda, whatever future action manifests and becomes accomplished, that is called existence." From the sutra, he asked about the meaning of "the latent tendencies of ignorance." There are nine kinds of latent tendencies: the latent tendency of attachment, the latent tendency of malice, the latent tendency of pride, the latent tendency of ignorance, the latent tendency of views, the latent tendency of grasping at what is supreme, the latent tendency of jealousy,

are universal conjunctions, the universal conjunction of miserliness, and the universal conjunction of doubt. There are three kinds of bondage: the bondage of desire, the bondage of hatred, and the bondage of ignorance. There are seven latent defilements: the latent defilement of desire for sensual pleasures, the latent defilement of malice, the latent defilement of desire for existence, the latent defilement of pride, the latent defilement of ignorance, the latent defilement of views, and the latent defilement of doubt. There are four rivers: the river of desire, the river of existence, the river of views, and the river of ignorance. There are four bonds: the bond of desire, the bond of existence, the bond of views, and the bond of ignorance. From the fourth verse of the summary of the Hinayana exposition, it should be understood that the exposition was made in the sutra where the wandering ascetic Jambudvipa's Shadow asked the venerable Shariputra about universal conjunctions, etc. In the sutra, "being defiled by desire," etc., the beginning is in Shravasti. Those who rely on and abide in morality should practice two dharmas: shamatha and vipassana. If one cultivates shamatha diligently and practices it many times, what benefit will one attain? If one cultivates vipassana diligently and practices it many times, what benefit will one attain? If one cultivates shamatha diligently and practices it many times, the mind will be tamed; if the mind is tamed, one will abandon desire. If one cultivates vipassana diligently and practices it many times, wisdom will be tamed; if wisdom is tamed, one will abandon ignorance. The mind defiled by desire will not be liberated. The wisdom defiled by ignorance will not be extinguished. Monks, the mind free from desire and attachment will be liberated, and the mind free from ignorance will be liberated. Monk, whoever has abandoned desire and whose mind is liberated, and whoever is free from desire and whose wisdom is liberated from ignorance, and who has realized it with his body, that person has cut off craving.
