Monks and Brahmins, based on what understanding, reliance, and focus do they speak of these eight things? It is as previously stated. Monks, there are ascetics or Brahmins who view and speak in this way: 'I, possessing form, will become without perception in the afterlife.' Or they say: 'Without form,' or 'Possessing form,' or 'Neither with nor without form,' or 'Neither without form nor not without form,' but in the afterlife, they will become without perception. Or they say: 'My self is finite,' but in the afterlife, they will become without perception. Or they say: 'Infinite,' or 'Finite,' or 'Neither finite nor infinite,' or 'Neither infinite nor not infinite,' but in the afterlife, they will become without perception.' Monks, based on what understanding do they speak of these eight things... as previously stated. Monks, ascetics and Brahmins who slightly... as previously stated, up to the point of knowing more. Monks, other dharmas... as previously stated. Monks, ascetics and Brahmins who speculate on the limits of the future, saying 'neither with nor without perception,' boast by saying, 'In the afterlife, I am neither with nor without perception.'

Neither boundless nor with bounds, nor a boundary, neither perceiving nor not perceiving on the other shore, thus it turns. Monks, these eight things, relying on what, dwelling on what, seeing what, do those who speculate on the past say, 'neither perceiving nor not perceiving'? I, on the other shore, neither perceiving nor not perceiving, realize and speak through realization. Monks, from 'thus they say' to 'especially know.' Monks, whatever other dharma, as before. What is it? Up to as before. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins, speculating on the future, say annihilation, 'I will become annihilated on the other shore,' speaking through realization, there are, namely, in these seven things. Those ascetics and Brahmins, relying on what, dwelling on what, seeing what, do they say, up to speaking through realization. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins, speculating on the past, seeing thus, speaking thus, there are, namely, 'As long as I am with form, coarse, born from the cause of the four great elements, living, dwelling, growing, so long there is sickness, sores, pain, fever. When I am cut off, destroyed, not born from one place to another, only then will I be truly annihilated.' The gods who dwell in the desire realm, the gods who dwell in the form realm, those who approach the sphere of infinite space in the formless realm, those who approach the sphere of infinite consciousness in the formless realm, those who approach the sphere of nothingness in the formless realm, those who approach the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception in the formless realm, living, dwelling, growing, approaching dwelling, so long there is sickness, sores, up to truly annihilated. Monks, this is relying on seven things, dwelling on what, seeing what, do those who speculate on the future say annihilation, up to speaking through realization.

How does one understand what has been explained without being distinguished? Venerable sir, form is not self; abandoning that dharma leads to long-term benefit, advantage, and happiness. Feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are not self; abandoning that dharma leads to long-term benefit, advantage, and happiness. Venerable sir, Blessed One, I wish to fully understand the meaning of what I have thus briefly explained without distinguishing it. Monk, well done! Well done! Monk, it is well that you understand the meaning of what I have briefly explained without distinguishing it. Why is that? Monk, form is not self, therefore you should abandon that dharma. If you abandon that dharma, it will lead to long-term benefit, advantage, and happiness. Feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are not self, therefore you should abandon that dharma. If you abandon that dharma, it will lead to long-term benefit, advantage, and happiness. Then, that monk, delighted and pleased by what the Blessed One had said, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, that monk, having been instructed by the Blessed One with this brief teaching, became a predictor of solitude, immeasurability, freedom from affliction, and the nature of equanimity. Abiding in solitude, immeasurability, freedom from affliction, and the nature of equanimity, for the sake of what meaning did the son of good family shave his hair and beard, don the robes, and go forth from home to homelessness out of faith alone, practicing the unsurpassed pure conduct, having realized the complete knowledge by directly experiencing it with his own wisdom in this very life: "Birth is exhausted, pure conduct has been established, what needed to be done has been done, there is no further return to this existence." Thus, endowed with wisdom and longevity, he became an Arhat whose mind was completely liberated. This very meaning is the summary of the aggregates, and from the third verse, seven other sutras appear as follows: Concordance, number, constant practice, old age, total practice, discernment, warmth, and the mind is liberated. In the two sutras.
