If so, that would become my lie, and that would become my wrong view. A monk or Brahmin would fear because of wrong view, would become fearful because of wrong view, would completely condemn wrong view, and would cling to it and abide there. From "thus" to as before. Monks, this is the second case. Any ascetic or Brahmin, through realizing, relying on, and focusing on what, from "thus" to as before, will generate mental distraction through words. Furthermore, a third case will arise, namely, any ascetic or Brahmin who, through realizing, relying on, and focusing on what, speculates on the past extreme, saying there is no death and no distraction. From "thus" to as before. Monks, here some ascetics or Brahmins do not truly know unwholesome dharmas as they are, and wholesome dharmas. From "thus" to as before. That would become my lie, and whatever is my lie, and whatever is my wrong view, that is not true. Therefore, that ascetic or Brahmin fears because of untrue ignorance, fears because of untrue ignorance, and thus completely condemns untrue ignorance, and there lets go of the mind and abides, from "island" to mental distraction will arise through words. Monks, this is the third case. From "thus" to distraction will arise. Furthermore, a fourth case will arise, namely, any ascetic or Brahmin who, through realizing, relying on, and focusing on what, from "thus" to as before. Monks, here some ascetics or Brahmins, being naturally foolish and dull, think to themselves: If someone comes to me and asks, "Is there a next world?", I should answer, "There is a next world." If they ask me, "Is there a next world?" or "Is there no next world?", I should answer in the same way. For "exists" and "does not exist," and "neither exists nor does not exist," and "is that way" and "is not that way," and "is other" and "is not other," and "that is not," "that is not," "that is not, nor is it like that," if they ask like this, I should answer, "That is not," "That is not."

If I say that I will prophesy inquiring about the afterlife, then ascetics or Brahmins will be afraid because of ignorance, become afraid because of ignorance, and will condemn ignorance. There abiding and remaining, becoming an island, refuge, and support, from the undying and unwavering, wavering will arise from the words of inquiry. Monks, this is the fourth thing, namely, from what is realized, upon what is relied, and with what as an object, until wavering arises. Some monks or Brahmins contemplate the past extreme, the undying and unwavering, and from the words of the undying and unwavering, wavering arises, all of these are these things, from which nothing that is not there will arise. The Tathagata truly and completely knows them as they are, having become a seer, these people hold and contemplate, as before. Monks, ascetics, and Brahmins, any seers who contemplate the past extreme, all those who proclaim are not superior to or more than these eighteen views. The Tathagata truly and completely knows them as they are, until knowing them even more, as before. Monks, any other dharmas that appear profound, are as before. Monks, what are any other dharmas that appear profound? As before. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins contemplate the future extreme, proclaiming having perception, and declare that in the afterlife I will become a perceiver, just like these sixteen things. Ascetics or Brahmins contemplate the past extreme, for these sixteen things, realizing what, as before. Monks, here some ascetics or Brahmins think like this, and say like this: In the afterlife I will have a form, becoming a perceiver, or without form, or having form and without form, or neither having form nor without form, and in the afterlife becoming a perceiver, or having one perception, or having many perceptions, or small

And with limitless consciousness, becoming such and so forth. Complete happiness, complete suffering, happiness and suffering. Neither happiness nor suffering, and I become conscious on the other shore, such and so forth. Monks, these forty-six, having understood and relying on and focusing on what, do those who understand the ultimate end speak of as conscious, etc., speaking manifestly. Monks, whatever renunciates or Brahmins slightly understand the ultimate end, all of those are not superior to these forty-six, nor are they more numerous. The Tathagata fully knows those as they are, and having surpassed them, also fully knows as they are, that these are those who hold to views, act in this way, think in this way, discriminate in this way, walk in this way, are accustomed and proper, are those who go to the other shore in this way, the Tathagata fully knows as they are. Having surpassed those, he also fully knows as they are. The Tathagata fully knows those as they are, and having surpassed those, also fully knows as they are, not manifestly speculating, and with the nature of discernment, each individually knowing with the nature of self-realization, he knows complete nirvana, and knowing the arising and cessation of wandering, this is suffering, this is the arising of suffering, thus he knows excellently. Renunciates, whatever other dharmas appear profound and deep, etc., as before. Monks, whatever other dharmas appear profound and deep, what are they? etc., as before. Monks, being with end, one becomes conscious on the other shore, and being without end, and being with end, and being neither with end nor without end, being neither with end nor without end, one becomes conscious on the other shore, and so forth. Some renunciates or Brahmins who speculate on the ultimate end, manifestly speak of being conscious of no self on the other shore, there are those who speak manifestly, namely, regarding these eight things. Those are good.
