The Blessed One possesses this noble aggregate of moral discipline, therefore, he dwells guarding the doors of his senses, from guarding the doors of his senses to possessing sense restraint, he possesses this noble aggregate of moral discipline, he dwells knowing when going and coming. When looking and carefully looking, and when resting in sleep, he does not dwell without knowing, from this to dwelling having cultivated the fourth dhyana. Such is being secluded from desires. Monks, furthermore, those profound and appearing as profound dharmas, completely pure and completely cleansed, are those that one has directly known and directly awakened to, and then taught and explained, therefore others will praise and speak of the Tathagata as he truly is. Monks, some ascetics or brahmins who speculate on the past and speak of permanence, openly declare "I and the world are permanent," they openly declare this because there is a reason, namely based on four things. Monks, what do those brahmins understand, rely on, and aim at, that they speculate on the past and speak of permanence, openly declaring based on these four things "I and the world are permanent"? Monks, here, some ascetics or brahmins go to a solitary place, the foot of a tree, or an empty house, due to the cause of complete burning, the cause of abandonment, the cause of cultivation, the cause of repeated practice, the cause of proper attention, they attain such a samadhi of peaceful mind. Just as when his mind is evenly placed, he remembers twenty cycles of formation and destruction, he thinks thus: "I and the world are permanent. The permanence of I and the world is just like that. I am in a solitary place, at the foot of a tree, or in an empty house..." From remembering twenty cycles of formation and destruction, to "I and the world are permanent, not passing away, not moving, not subject to harm, eternally existing, existing like a diamond. These beings that have appeared themselves connect and transmigrate, there is nothing equal to permanence." Monks, this is the first thing.

Those who, understanding what, relying on what, and focusing on what, speculate about the past and speak of permanence, are those who manifestly declare, "The self and the world are permanent." If other ascetics or Brahmins, understanding what, relying on what, and focusing on what, speculate about the past and speak of permanence, manifestly declaring, "The self and the world are permanent," then, monks, here some ascetics and Brahmins, as teachers, or under trees, or in empty houses, obtain a mind of peaceful concentration through causes of complete burning, causes of abandonment, causes of meditation, causes of repeated practice, causes of proper attention, and such actions. When the mind is thus placed in equanimity, they fully remember forty eons between destruction and formation. They think, "The self and the world are permanent. The self and the world are permanent, and thus it is transformed." And as before, remembering forty eons between destruction and formation, "The self and the world are unmoving, unchanging, unharmed, always abiding, and beings abiding like diamonds have arisen, connecting and abiding in their own nature, equal to permanence, and there is nothing else." Monks, this is the second thing, and as before, the manifest speaker is the manifest speaker. Other third ascetics or Brahmins, understanding what, relying on what, and focusing on what, speculate about the past and speak of permanence, and as before, when the mind is thus placed in equanimity, they remember eighty eons between destruction and formation. They think, "The self and the world are permanent, and thus it is transformed," and "Permanent, and equal, there is nothing else." Monks, this is the third thing. Understanding what, relying on what, and focusing on what, those who speculate about the past and speak of permanence, are those who manifestly declare, "The self and the world are permanent." Other fourth ascetics or Brahmins, understanding what, relying on what, and focusing on what, speculate about the past and speak of permanence, and as before, the mind
