ignorance, not knowing the Sangha, suffering, the origin, cessation, the path, not knowing the phenomena arising from causes, not knowing the virtuous and non-virtuous, with and without faults, dependence and non-dependence, what should be abandoned and what should not be abandoned, white and black, and not knowing the dependent arising phenomena with distinctions. Thus, the six sense spheres of contact, like this, individually not understanding as they truly are. Whatever it may be, not knowing, not seeing, not realizing, darkness and delusion, called the darkness of ignorance, this is called ignorance. What is the karma formed by the condition of ignorance? Karma is of three types: bodily karma, verbal karma, and mental karma. What is the consciousness that arises from the condition of karma? There are six groups of consciousness: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. What is name and form that arises from the condition of consciousness? Name is the four formless aggregates: the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations, and the aggregate of consciousness. What is form? Whatever form it may be, all of that is the four great elements, and what is caused by the four great elements. Combining this form and all that was previously shown, it is called name and form. What are the six sense spheres that arise from the condition of name and form? They are the six internal sense spheres: the internal sense sphere of the eye, the ear, the nose, the tongue, the body, and the internal sense sphere of the mind. What is the contact that arises from the condition of the six sense spheres? It is the six types of contact: contact arising from the union of the eye, the ear, the nose, the tongue, the body, and the mind. What is the feeling that arises from the condition of contact? There are three types of feeling: pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor

Nor is it a painful feeling. Craving arises from feeling, what is craving? There are three types of craving: desire craving, form craving, and formless craving. Grasping arises from craving, what is grasping? There are four types of grasping: desire grasping, view grasping, moral discipline and asceticism grasping, and self-assertion grasping. Existence arises from grasping, what is existence? There are three types of existence: desire existence, form existence, and formless existence. Birth arises from existence, what is birth? That such and such sentient beings, in the same category of sentient beings, are born, truly born, appear, manifest, emerge, obtain aggregates, obtain places and birth places, aggregates manifest, faculties and clusters manifest, this is called birth. Aging and death arise from birth, what are aging and death? Whatever is baldness, white hair, crookedness, many wrinkles, hunchback, hoarse voice, bent body leaning on a staff, spots appearing on the skin, weakened body, bound body, faculties decaying and maturing, decay and aging of all actions, this is called aging. What is death? In that equal fate of sentient beings, death, transfer, destruction, disappearance, decrease of lifespan and temperature, transfer of aggregates, cessation of faculties, death and demise, this is called death. Death and aging are combined and called aging and death. This is called the explanation of the branches of dependent origination. Monks, I will explain to you the beginning of dependent origination and the explanation of the branches, as it has been said, it has been extensively explained. For example, as it is said in the Elephant Footprint Sutra, what is said in the last seven of the Middle Elephant Footprint Sutra, should be referred to the first chapter of the Treasury of Knowledge. The general content stated therein is extracted as follows: What is the earth element?

Now, venerable ones, there are two kinds of earth element: internal and external. There is also an internal earth element. What is the internal earth element? Whatever within this body is of the nature of solidity, roughness, holding, and having been held, what is that? For example: hair, body hair, nails, teeth, dust, dirt, skin, flesh, bones, veins, sinews, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines, spleen, stomach, cecum, whatever is roughly formed. Whatever within this body is solid, rough, holding, and having been held, this is called the internal earth element of self-nature. Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, the beginning of this matter is in Shravasti. Then, another monk came near to where the Blessed One was. Having come near, ... until he said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, did you make dependent arising, or did someone else make it?" Monk, dependent arising was not made by me, nor was it made by another. Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, this nature of dharmas exists, it is the boundary of dharma. The Tathagata himself knows and manifestly awakens to it, and then teaches, shows, distinguishes, relates, and correctly clarifies it. That is, this being, that arises; this arising, that is born. Because of ignorance, there is action; because of action, there is consciousness... as before, until "only this will completely arise." Similarly, this not being, that does not arise; this ceasing, that ceases. For example, with the cessation of ignorance, action ceases... until birth and old age and death cease. Thus spoke the Blessed One. For example, if there is ignorance from elsewhere, then actions will arise, otherwise, if there is no cause of ignorance, actions will not arise. In the beginning that corresponds correctly, corresponding to karma and having results, the third sutra that is classified into the collection of summaries called 'having fruit'.
