Monks, what is the cause of mind? What is the condition? What is the reason? Monks, the cause of mind is karma, the condition is karma, the reason is karma. Monks, karma also has a cause, has a condition, and has a reason. Monks, what is the cause of karma? What is the condition? What is the reason? Monks, the cause of karma is craving, the condition is craving, the reason is craving. Monks, craving also has a cause, has a condition, and has a reason. Monks, what is the cause of craving? What is the condition? What is the reason? Monks, the cause of craving is ignorance, the condition is ignorance, the reason is ignorance. Monks, ignorance has a cause, has a condition, and has a reason. Monks, what is the cause, condition, and reason of ignorance? Inappropriate attention is the cause, inappropriate attention is the condition, inappropriate attention is the reason. Monks, inappropriate attention also has a cause, inappropriate attention also has a condition, inappropriate attention also has a reason. Monks, what is the cause of inappropriate attention? What is the condition? What is the reason? Monks, relying on mind and dharma, the attention born from ignorance produces disturbance. Because of delusion and complete delusion, that ignorance seeks craving. If there is craving, it creates the karma of distinguishing. Monks, inappropriate attention has ignorance as its cause, ignorance has craving as its cause, craving has karma as its cause, karma has the eye as its cause. This is a category of dharma called having a cause, having a condition, and having a reason. Monks, the dharma that has a cause, has a condition, and has a reason should be explained. From then on, just as before, the dharma that has a cause, has a condition, and has a reason should be explained. As I have said, it should be explained in detail. Thus he spoke. In other sutras, it is said that ignorance gathers, and feeling arises from contact.

It should be consulted what is written in the second place of the first Sutra Pitaka, which was previously spoken in four verses in the Skandha section, regarding the absorption of the cessation of non-existent formations. The Blessed One said, "I will also explain to you the Dharma of Dependent Arising," and as before, immediately write the sutra saying: Monks, now I will explain to you Dependent Arising and the Dharma of Dependent Arising. Starting with "This is not the meaning of the sutra," it is located in Shravasti. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, I will explain the beginning and classification of Dependent Arising, listen carefully and remember well, I will explain. What is the beginning of Dependent Arising? That is, this exists, therefore that arises; this arises, therefore that arises. Thus, with ignorance as the condition, actions arise; with actions as the condition, consciousness arises; with consciousness as the condition, name and form arise; with name and form as the condition, the six sense sources arise; with the six sense sources as the condition, contact arises; with contact as the condition, feeling arises; with feeling as the condition, craving arises; with craving as the condition, grasping arises; with grasping as the condition, existence arises; with existence as the condition, birth arises; with birth as the condition, old age and death arise, as well as sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and agitation. Monks, in this way, this great mass of suffering will arise, and this is called the object of Dependent Arising. What is the classification? That is, with ignorance as the condition, actions arise. What is ignorance? That is, not knowing the past extreme, not knowing the future extreme, not knowing the past and future extremes, not knowing the internal, not knowing the external, not knowing the internal and external, not knowing karma, not knowing the ripening, not knowing the ripening of karma, not knowing the cause, not knowing the effect, not knowing the cause and effect, not knowing the Buddha, not knowing the Dharma.
