And the future. It possesses present objects. If it is asked, "Do the past and future exist as substances?" Does it exist with its own essence and characteristics, like the present? Or does it not exist with its own essence, like the present? Because it exists at all times, like the present, the past and future states also exist with their own essence, therefore it would become permanent. "How is it with that?" refers to the objects and appearances of the past and future. "Definite" refers to the afflictions of the past and future. Regarding the statement "having or not having," what does not exist cannot have or not have, because neither exists. Because it possesses the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, conditioned phenomena will not be permanent. From the perspective of conditioned phenomena, conditioned phenomena change with time, and what changes with time cannot be permanent. Because they are called past, etc., perception is also not permanent. If it were to become permanent, then the names of things, etc., themselves would not be possible, like space, etc. To clearly assert means to exist with its own essence, like the present. Why do they assert it that way? Is it based on scripture or reasoning, or relying on both? This is the intention of the question. Because it has been said, it temporarily quotes the scripture, because in the scripture it is sung, "Past form exists, future form exists," therefore the past and future exist. What is presently occurring is not mentioned, because no one would say that the two are inconsistent. Consciousness depends on two things, this is a detailed explanation. Here it is said in terms of meaning that the past and future exist, which is different from what was previously stated directly. Here, if one definitely states the support and object of the six consciousnesses from depending on the eye and form to depending on the mind and dharma, even if one speaks without distinction, one also thinks that consciousness can arise without an object, then, in that case, blind people, etc., also without support

Why not consider the arising of consciousness? Because there is no specific cause. Non-existent things are not included in the six realms, so there is no wisdom with non-existent things as its object. Therefore, because there is no object, it will not become consciousness either. If consciousness is the separate recognition of individual things, if there is nothing to be recognized, then it will not recognize anything at all, so it will not become consciousness either. If there are no self-characteristics and general characteristics, then what will it include, and what is to be recognized? "When the fruit arises," and so on, will be explained in detail. After the virtuous and non-virtuous actions have ceased, a long time has passed, and if they have ceased, then they do not exist. If that is the case, because there is no cause, the ripening fruit will not arise. It is impossible for there to be no cause, because it would be too extreme. It is said that one must admit this without hesitation, and so on will be explained in detail. The sound called "Sarvāstivāda" is because it has the cause of action. Precisely because of this, it is said, "Because it says it exists, therefore everything. Saying Sarvāstivāda." In order to determine the sound of everything in the three times, the sound of everything speaks of the three times. Those who say that happiness and other unproduced fruits exist are speaking separately. The Sutra masters only speak of what is manifest now. When dharmas enter into various seasons, things will become other, which is to say that future and other dharmas will become other, just like this, future dharmas are abandoned and become present dharmas, and present dharmas are abandoned and become past dharmas. It is not that it becomes another substance, which is to say that the self-nature of the substance does not become another, and things enter into various seasons because the self-nature is not confused. Furthermore, what are future and other dharmas? It is the difference in the qualities of merit from which past, future, and present knowledge and speech enter. For example, a golden vessel, these are the two examples of it, gold and milk, a collection of colors and so on.
