If it is admitted that this is the case, then it will become so. So what is it? Merit is of two kinds: that which arises from the cause of giving, and that which arises from complete enjoyment. Arising is the cause and the acting cause, as well as the enumeration of things with a cause, and the meaning of what is called the cause of giving. Therefore, even if there is no complete enjoyment of things, it will become merit arising from the cause of giving to a stupa. For completely giving things, whether or not there is complete enjoyment of that thing afterwards is fine, because non-attachment is the antidote to attachment. The mind that arises simultaneously will not be devoured by ghosts. If it is not like that, then for things offered to the Sangha, individuals, etc., if they are only completely not enjoyed and destroyed, then that giving will become meaningless, because it will become without the fruit of merit. If there is no receiver there, how can it be merit? For the time being, the Bhagavan has already said that all those are completely accepted. Immeasurable things such as loving-kindness, and cultivating right view, will arise. Abiding in loving-kindness, thinking that all sentient beings may have happiness, because it is virtuous, and because of the union without hatred. Just so, although no one is benefited by happiness, and there is no receiver, it is not that there is no supreme merit arising from the power of intention, and it is the same for abiding in compassion. Therefore, just like loving-kindness, etc., for a stupa without a receiver, one should desire that merit manifest from one's own mind that particularly cherishes its qualities. Giving and offering are also not meaningless, because the faith that initiates those actions is the most supreme. The action of giving and offering, the faith thought of in the mind, that is the most supreme, because it is the action of completely engaging body and speech. Benefiting others and harming, or depending on a receiver, the virtue and non-virtue that arise from mind and mental factors, do not transform in this way. So what is it? Virtue and

It is because it depends on being the same as the root of virtue. If it is not so, giving clothes, food, poison, etc., for the purpose of harming others will also become merit, because there are also recipients and those who bestow benefits. If the good basis is said to increase. If naked ascetics give to robbers, etc., it will turn into an undesirable result, because the desirable and undesirable results of giving depend on the field, so they say. The naked ascetics' This Dharma is wrongly preached, like this, an evil field will produce a desirable result. It should not be said that the result becomes desirable depending on the field. Then what should be said? It should be said that it is a supreme result. Just like killing, whether it is a good field or a bad field, in any case, it is an undesirable result. Giving is also, whether it is a good field or a bad field, in any case, it is only a desirable result. The difference in the field will only make the result bigger, smaller, or without result, but it will not become an undesirable result. The phrase "Immoral discipline is an unwholesome form" is because immoral discipline is the nature of body and speech. That is from killing with premeditation and completion, up to frivolous speech. Therefore, abandoning the unwholesome form is discipline. Also, is it only abandoning immoral discipline that is discipline? The answer is: No. The abandonment prescribed by the Buddha, and the two types of abandoning offenses prescribed for eating untimely food, etc., are also discipline. The phrase "Having taken the precepts" means that the prescribed offenses are not immoral discipline by nature. Then what is it? That is, for those who have taken the precepts, it will become immoral discipline. Possessing the four pure qualities. Who has the four qualities? That is, possessing the four qualities. Temporarily with immoral discipline, thus extensively speaking, immoral discipline is deliberately thinking and removing the downfall. Saying like this is that immoral discipline is an unwholesome form.
