The reason for saying "earth and so on are the six elements" is that the five aggregates of the undefiled path of liberation are the five conditioned aggregates of the fruits of a renunciate, and separation is the unconditioned fruit of a renunciate, therefore they are the six elements. The so-called "they are not established solely by relying on matter" means that mindfulness and so on are not established solely by relying on matter, because the designation of dharma is established on both. The so-called "the meaning of dependence has already been examined" is like, for example, what depends on what. Those are not dependent like relying on paintings and lacquer trees, and so on, as explained in detail. If there is no self, why do thoughts of the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions circulate and appear in the mind? If one accepts momentariness, the relationship between action and result is impossible. Because the self-nature of the aggregates such as form perish separately, and from those arising from the first moment, the difference in their essence depends on other moments, it is impossible for a result to arise. If that is the case, the results of actions such as bodily adornment and generosity will be experienced by offerings and generosity. According to the view that there is a self, when a thought arises, dharma or non-dharma is established on the self of the mind and then ceases. From those two, dharma and non-dharma, being suppressed by others, it is reasonable for a result to arise at another time. If it is said that the gods do not know because they are blessed by joy, according to our view, the past mind does not hinder the present mind, but the difference in the mind that arises together with the previous mind, the arising that is particularly produced by the power of the mind, that difference in power is the difference from which the continuum is completely transformed, and the subsequent arising of the result is called blessing. The difference in the present mind also becomes the cause of the difference in the power of the mind that arises immediately after, so it is said that that mind is the obstructer. Therefore, the past does not obstruct, and the present does not bless, because they are not blessed at the time of cessation and arising. It is said: From which mind does karma arise, that continuum.
