It is meaningless. Things like singing and dancing, the word "etc." includes music, incense, flower garlands, unguents, and colors. The phrase "without it" refers to eating on time. The phrase "neither is present" refers to fasting and remembering asceticism. When ordained people eat on time, it causes householders to recall asceticism. The statement "to be divided into two" will appear. Why divide it into two? Because otherwise, nourishment would only have seven branches, not eight. For example, right view is both the path and a branch of the path, which will be explained in detail. The so-called "eightfold path" means that right view is both the path and a branch of the path, because the path is characterized by wisdom. Knowing the cessation and non-arising are enlightenment and branches. Samadhi is both meditation and a branch of meditation. The phrase "those very right views, etc." means that those very right views, etc., cannot be branches of right view, discrimination of dharma as a branch of enlightenment, and samadhi, etc., which is the meaning of "inappropriate." If the earlier right views, etc., become branches of the later right views, etc., then even if examined in this way, the noble path that arises in the first moment will not become the eightfold path, because there, the previously arisen right view has no branches, and it will become the sevenfold path. Mentioning the first moment is to distinguish it from the knowledge of dharma in suffering, etc., because there, there is a previously arisen right view, and it will not become the sevenfold path. The same should be said about the branches of enlightenment. The phrase "except for not knowing" refers to covering, accepting, forgetting, and immaturity. For those who doubt the Three Jewels and have wrong views, vows will not arise. Because those who do not take refuge due to not knowing, if they do not take refuge because of wrong views or doubt, then even if they have not taken refuge, they will

The seed of taking vows arises. The so-called "householder" is a term of the doctrine. The so-called "wearing white clothes" is an explanation. The so-called "male" is a term of the doctrine. The so-called "having male genitals" is an explanatory term, or to prevent beings who engage in sexual activity in form. The Kashmiris say that without vows, there is no change, just like monks and novices. If one obtains the lay vows merely by taking refuge, then why take the lay vows again after taking refuge? Therefore, it is said in detail, "Even if one obtains the vows." A monk obtains the vows through petition and four karmas, and a novice also vows, "I, named so-and-so, take refuge in the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni, the king of the Shakya clan. I follow him into homelessness, abandoning the signs of a householder and taking the signs of a renunciant. Please, Venerable One, accept me as a novice." After saying this two or three times, one obtains the vows. Similarly, monks and novices, in order to know that they have previously obtained the vows, are later made to uphold the precepts, and so it is with lay practitioners. Practicing one is guarding one precept. Guarding one side is guarding two or three. Practicing mostly is guarding four. Practicing completely is guarding all five precepts. The sutra says, "It is not so," which is a phrase from the *Mahanama Sutra*, because it does not recite, "Please, Venerable One, accept me as a lay practitioner. From now on until the end of my life, I will abandon killing." The *ibid.* says, "The characteristics of a lay practitioner will be explained," which is from the *Mahanama Sutra*. Therefore, from this statement, one cannot obtain the lay vows merely by taking refuge, because it is not recited in the *Mahanama Sutra*. From where is it said like this? The sutra says, "Whoever, until the end of their life, takes refuge in non-killing"

The arising of the names "u" and "and", from which arise those who have seen the truth, namely, those individuals. The so-called "cause of knowing and believing" is the cause and condition of knowing and believing. The so-called "even for life" means that even for the sake of life, one vows in the supreme Dharma, but it does not show the nature of discipline. This sutra is not the nature of discipline, and discipline is not discipline, which is the concluding remark. The so-called "abandoning life," if it does not arise from anywhere, refers to the Great Name Sutra or other scriptures. The so-called "who will declare this completely unclear meaning" means not knowing whether to abandon life or to abandon the killing of life. The so-called "request is also unreasonable" means asking how much a monk practices one part of the lay vows, up to the request for complete practice, which is unreasonable. Where the request is unreasonable, how can the answer be reasonable? Enduring only this ground means enduring from one precept to enduring all five. The so-called "limb determination" refers to the five limbs and ten limbs, etc. The so-called "small, etc., like the mind" means that just as their virtues, etc., depend only on the mind, so do small, etc. The so-called "Arhats also have small Pratimoksha vows" means if there is a small mind that can initiate. The so-called "ordinary beings also have great ones" means if they have a great initiation. It does not change, except for those who do not know. The so-called "unknowing" refers to the giver and the receiver, and if one does not take refuge due to hesitation, then there is no lay vow. The so-called "Dharma that can make" is the cause of being nominally called Buddha, therefore it is said "by what is the main," that is, by the door of manifestation. Also, the so-called "by what is obtained" is by the door of attainment, having understood everything, it is the basis, that is, becoming a Buddha, therefore those Dharmas are those that can make a Buddha. What are they? The so-called "knowing the end," etc., by the sound of "etc.," means knowing non-arising, not learning.
