Therefore, it is determined by inference. For example, saying "one should observe the five senses" is like observing the sense of sight, and so on. Even if there are causes such as soil and water, if other causes lacking the characteristic of a seed are absent, the result is not seen. If the seed is present, then the sprout is also seen. For example, saying "like a sprout" is to provide a convenient illustration. In order to directly demonstrate by providing a convenient illustration, it is explained in detail that "the state that appears as an object," that is, forms, etc., that appear as objects. Even if the cause that produces it exists and the agent exists, if there is no apprehension of the object, such as eye consciousness, etc., sometimes it is seen as non-existent, and sometimes it is seen as existent. Which ones? It is shown according to number, such as the blind and the deaf are non-existent. The non-blind and the non-deaf are existent. What other cause must be relied upon? That is the sense faculty, which is thought to be the eye, etc. How is it determined that that is the sense faculty? It is not enough to merely determine "this has another cause," it cannot be determined that that is the sense faculty. Because this is to completely determine the knowledge desired by the great sage. And "that" refers to the cause of eye consciousness, etc., that is, the eye faculty, etc., exists, because everyone is indisputable, so this is what is established. I am not non-existent, because there is no valid cognition, therefore there is no self, this is the conclusion. From the meaning to be proven, it is not said that I am non-existent because valid cognition has not observed it, just like being completely non-existent. If there is inference here, therefore the reason is not established, that is not right, because it must be said. If it exists, then say it. It is not possible to refute the reason is not established merely with words. When summarizing all the meanings with verses, it is said: For me, inverted for others, there is no liberation, just like the four afflictions. Because valid cognition has not observed it, it is called "that" in the continuum of aggregates. In this way, other non-Buddhists are destroyed, as well as some sons of the Shakyas who are proud of their views.

That. Therefore, what is called the Sthavira-nikāya, etc., is extensively explained. The Sthavira-nikāya is a sect revered by many noble ones. This shows that the reason for the characteristic is uncertain because of clinging to the inverted view of self. The Sthavira-nikāya, being Buddhist, does not not desire liberation. Furthermore, this shows that the former proposition is contradictory, saying that the proposition of "no self" has faults. The Sthavira-nikāya sect is its own proposition, so it contradicts the promise. This is something to be practiced for a while, thinking that if the person of that sect exists nominally, then there is no fault. If it exists substantially, then this proposition is placed in the heretical proposition, and it is refuted by the method of refuting the self as described. How so? Because there is no valid measure, it does not exist. What is meant by "substantially"? What is meant by "nominally"? Thus questioned. The teacher says: If it is a different object like form, then it is said to exist substantially. If it is said that form, etc., is a different object from sound, etc., just as form is different in nature from sound, etc., if it is thought that the person exists substantially, then it is promised that the person exists nominally. If it is a generality like milk, then it means that if, like milk, houses, and armies, etc., in order, it is not considered a different object from form, smell, taste, and touch, etc., and from grass, wood, and bricks, etc., and from elephants, horses, and chariots, etc., but only the generality of those, if it is thought that way, then it is promised that the person exists nominally. Other than form, etc., and grass, etc., and elephants, etc., there is no other object called milk, houses, and armies. What change is there in that? For the time being, if it exists substantially, then because it is different in nature from feeling, etc., the person is different from the aggregates, etc., and the person is the characteristic of the aggregates of form, etc.
