The reason for saying "attention" is that afflictions can be abandoned by attention alone. If love and so on are faith-understanding attention, then they cannot abandon afflictions. The path of abandonment is not to take sentient beings that arise in the present as objects. What then? It takes the dharmas of the lower realms as objects, which are of the three times. They have aspects such as grossness and aspects such as suffering. Therefore, because of these reasons, they are not the abandonment of those. If they cannot abandon afflictions, then how are they said to be the antidotes to hatred and so on? Therefore, it is said, "by their application." Among them, the realms of love and so on, and the invincible grounds, can subdue afflictions such as hatred, while the grounds of actual meditative absorption prolong the abandonment of afflictions. In order to show that very point, it is explained in detail, "the desire realm of love and so on." "Similar to the actual immeasurable ones" refers to the fact that their nature, object, aspect, and time are the same. It is said, "they subdue those," which means that those immeasurable ones subdue those afflictions. "By the path of abandonment" refers to the uninterrupted paths and so on. "Completely abandon" means to cut off its attainment. "Possessing the power of conditions" refers to its objective sphere. "Obtaining those" means that those become manifest. "It is not suppressed" means that those do not arise. The great category of friends is those who are equal in birth, dharma, and body, and without whom it is difficult to abide. The middle category is related to friends, food, and dharma. The small category is whatever is beneficial and related to food. Similarly, there are three categories of enemies: the great category steals fame, livelihood, contentment, and roots. The middle category steals the necessities of life. The small category steals the necessities of life of friends and attendants. There are also three categories of ordinary people: those who have not been seen before, those who have not been heard of, and those who have been seen and heard but are not familiar. Through these, one can also benefit and harm.

It is practice and separation. Therefore, the yogi initially combines with this, which is to combine with sentient beings divided into three types. When he does not retreat from rejoicing in happiness even towards the great enemy, just as towards the side of a great friend, then gradually he expands with loving-kindness to all the worlds. The so-called "by way of the appearance of the fruits of past merit and non-merit," even for those who have completely cut off the roots of virtue, one can see that the fruits of past merit are powerful, etc., and thus be able to grasp their qualities. Similarly, one can also see that the fruits of past non-merit are weak, etc., in the case of a Pratyekabuddha, and thus be able to grasp their faults. The so-called similarly for compassion and joy, one thinks, "How wonderful if they could be liberated from suffering," and thus combines with compassion. One thinks, "How wonderful if they could be happy," and thus combines with joy. Equanimity begins from the side of the ordinary. The side of the ordinary is in accordance with equanimity, but the other two are not, because they are the support of desire and anger, and their antidotes. Except for pleasant sounds, it only arises in the impure, not elsewhere, because it arises from the power of habituation. The so-called possessing the three certainties is because there is no birth and joy in the third and fourth dhyanas, so it possesses all three immeasurables. The so-called eight liberations, as it is extensively stated in the sutras, "Having form, one sees form, this is the first liberation." The so-called the way of these two should be understood like the impure, it starts from the antidote to the desire for color, which is the excess of desire, and thus one should declare its increase in existence. The so-called according to their number, the antidote to the color that is practiced in the desire realm is the liberation of the first dhyana ground, and the antidote to the desire for the color of the first dhyana is the liberation of the second dhyana ground, and it should also be understood that these two liberations are the antidotes for cutting off obstacles. It is said that there is no desire for color, etc., in the second dhyana and so on.
