being happy. Equanimity is not giving to benefits and harms, and their reasons. The so-called being in the middle state is in the manner of abandoning benefits and harms in equanimity. To those who do not possess these, it appears extensively. Because they possess happiness, they possess these. Not possessing these is not possessing these, to those who do not possess these. Because thinking "may they become like that", it is said, wishing sentient beings happiness, thinking "may they be liberated from suffering". Or, non-perverted thought will not become perversion itself. To this, thought refers to the thought without hatred, which is the virtuous dharma, that is, the mind and mental factors of thinking "may sentient beings be happy", and the retinue. Because the thought is not perverted, it will not become perversion itself. Also, how is the thought truly non-perverted? Therefore, it is said, "because of recognizing as conviction". The recognition of conviction is recognizing as conviction. Because the conviction of thinking of happiness is recognizing as it is, and not other than that, therefore there is no fault of perversion itself. If it is said, "it is merely non-virtuous", then, it is said, if someone thinks that because it is perverted it is not virtuous. The answer is: no, it is not like that, because it is the root of virtue. If asked: how is it the root of virtue? The answer is: because it is the cause of the root of virtue, it is the antidote to anger and so on. For example, thinking "may sentient beings be happy", at other times hatred will not generally arise. Similarly, it should also be said to others. If because of this, no one will become happy, then, is the effort to achieve it not meaningless? The answer is: it is not meaningless, because through it, faults such as hatred can be completely suppressed. The so-called "focusing on it" refers to focusing on sentient beings in the desire realm. In which realm are there enemies, friends, and those who are in the middle state, in the mind there are disharmonies such as hatred and attachment, and to whom there are benefits and harms, and there exists abandonment, those are merely theirs.

Because it is an object, the immeasurable ones do not have objects of form and formlessness. The object of great compassion is there. If sentient beings are the object, then how does it say "from one direction to believe"? The saying "a vessel dwells in a vessel" will appear, meaning that the place shows the one with the place. It means that for those sentient beings who have become one like a container, faith will be integrated into those who dwell in it. Joy exists in the second dhyana. It means that in the view of those who say that these joys arise from meditation, and that joy is the source of mental pleasure, joy exists in the first and second dhyanas, but not in the higher dhyanas, because there is no source of mental pleasure there. Others are in six places, meaning that because it is samadhi, it is not in the desire realm, and because it must focus on the coarse and so on, it is not in the near-samadhi of other dhyanas. Some say it is in five places, because it is the actual ground of dhyana except for the unobstructed. Because it mentions samadhi and non-samadhi, as well as the actual and the preparatory. Some loving-kindness etc. are the ground of samadhi, some are the ground of non-samadhi, some exist in the actual stage, and some exist in the preparatory stage, that is, the near-samadhi stage. Therefore, the ground of samadhi is the ninth ground, because it includes the actual and the preparatory. The ground of non-samadhi belongs to the desire realm. What is it? Because it arises from thought, it arises from preparation. Because it is the actual ground of dhyana, it means that if the path of abandonment can abandon afflictions, then the pure one of the actual cannot abandon afflictions. Being free from desire is also not entering the actual of dhyana, therefore they are not objects of abandonment. For the time being, according to the view of those who say that it exists in the five grounds except for the unobstructed, it is like this. According to the view of those who say that it exists in six or ten grounds, faith
