Regarding the statement "Na," the essence of dhyana and the formless realms, being pure, does not abandon the afflictions of the lower realms, because it is to be liberated from attachment to them. If one is not liberated from attachment to the lower realms, one cannot enter the essence of dhyana. Because they are not antidotes to each other, they are not in their own place. Regarding the statement "they are not antidotes to each other," it cannot be said that they are antidotes, because that would lead to the consequence that all beings would be without afflictions, and they would be bound by afflictions. How so? Because the afflictions of their own realm would increase thereby. Whatever affliction increases in whatever thing, it cannot destroy that thing, just like the afflictions of desire and so on. Regarding the statement "because it is exceedingly superior, it is also not a higher realm," it cannot be said that the inferior can abandon the superior, for if that were the case, the desire realm would also abandon the first dhyana. Regarding the statement "because it is the antidote to the lower realm," it is the antidote to the lower realm because it becomes liberated from attachment to the lower realm. Regarding the statement "by what does one enter into that," it means by what proximity does one enter into those essences of dhyana and the formless realms, which is synonymous with manifestation. Regarding the statement "are they also of three kinds?": pure, without outflows, and afflicted. Regarding the statement "do they also have feelings similar to those?" it means, similar to the essence, is there joy in the proximity of the first and second dhyanas, happiness in the proximity of the third dhyana, and equanimity in the proximity of the fourth dhyana? Because one must strive to rectify, one possesses the faculty of equanimity, because it is the path of effortless arising, it is associated with feeling (pleasure), but it is not striving to rectify. Because one has not been liberated from aversion to the lower realms, there is no joy or happiness, therefore it is associated with equanimity. Because it is the path of abandoning desire, it is not associated with feeling (pleasure). Being associated with feeling (pleasure) cannot be the path of abandoning desire.

Fear and the like cannot eliminate afflictions. The so-called first noble one, because he also arises joy from his own ground, is the antidote to the lower ground, therefore it is without outflows. If from the Explanation of Distinctions, the consciousness connected by proximity, and the consciousness that becomes death, as it is said, how could it not be an afflicted consciousness? Because there is no connection with the afflicted consciousness, proximity and the like are the same as tasting flavors, is there such a fault? It is not like that, because for them, afflictions are blocked in samadhi, it is not an affliction for birth. In order to show that, the consciousness of proximity is spoken of extensively. Some say three, because there is a connecting consciousness, and there is a samadhi that tastes flavors. The meaning is different, because the proximity and the like that are extensively explained are the cause of entering the main practice. Because there is no difference, for example, in the first dhyana, some have investigation and analysis, some only have analysis, like that it is not like that for the second dhyana and so on, so special dhyana is not mentioned there. The so-called that is neither pleasure nor pain, because there is no collection of three consciousnesses there, so there is no pleasure, because the manifest intention and possession of the lower state of tranquility itself is upright, so there is no joy. Because of that, the path is difficult, because it is upright because of manifest intention and possession. The so-called only stopping the investigation, because it is said "special dhyana without investigation." The samadhi that focuses on that is the samadhi without characteristics, the so-called what arises from the absence of characteristics is the absence of characteristics. The so-called five objects, because the objects are very captivating, so it is not the senses, so the objects are spoken of. The so-called three characteristics of conditioned phenomena are birth, old age, and impermanence. Other people say that the word "characteristic" is a synonym for cause, because from this object-dharma there is no characteristic and no cause, so it is without characteristics. Other people say that because it is separated from the characteristic of time, it is peace.
