It is established as a branch. Others say that investigation (rtog pa), analysis (dpyod pa), and samadhi (ting nge 'dzin) are not other entities, and that inner clarity is also not another entity. In this regard, the coarse state of mind's speech, which arouses everything, is investigation, and the subtle state of arousal is analysis. The state of non-distraction is samadhi, and the state of moving in extreme tranquility is complete inner clarity. If there is no other entity, how can it be? This is explained in detail as follows: Mental factors arise from the mind, but it is unreasonable for the mind itself to arise from mental factors. Not only are they other phenomena, but the distinctions of states existing in the mind are also said to be mental factors. This is the conclusion of the treatise, that investigation and so on are not other entities, or that the distinctions of the mind's states are mental factors. It is extensively explained in the Transformation Sutra, which states that the five faculties are the faculty of displeasure, the faculty of suffering, the faculty of pleasure, and the faculty of equanimity. When a monk's faculty of displeasure arises, he knows it as it truly is, and from this point until he dwells having perfected the first dhyana, the faculty of displeasure completely ceases, until it is completely extinguished. Monks, this is the definite liberation from the faculty of displeasure. Similarly, the faculties of suffering, displeasure, pleasure, and equanimity are extensively explained, and in accordance with their number, one dwells having perfected the second, third, and fourth dhyanas. The faculty of equanimity is that, not attending to any signs, one dwells having realized the signless samadhi of mind with the body. Here, this faculty of equanimity completely ceases, completely disappears, is completely exhausted, and is completely extinguished. This is the definite liberation from the faculty of equanimity.

arise. Therefore, the sutra states that only joy is mental ease, not pleasure. As stated before, these limbs are five for the first, three for the second, five for the third, and four for the fourth. It is said that there is no joy or pleasure born of solitude, solitude is born of solitude, there is no joy or pleasure. Why? Because it is not separated from afflictions, because it corresponds to the afflictions of its own ground. Thus it is said, separated from desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas. It is said that the inner mind is not completely clear, and the reason is given for this, that it is disturbed by afflictions. The meaning is that the afflictions of that ground are not completely purified. It is said that one is completely deluded by the pleasure of afflictions, that is, because of this delusion, one is completely deluded by the pleasure of afflictions, and there is no mindfulness or awareness. Because it is a ground of many virtues, equanimity is not present in the third affliction, therefore it is the second limb. If there is no equanimity, why is it not prevented? Because it is prevented in the fourth affliction, therefore it should be known that the third is also prevented. It is said that because it is defiled by afflictions, that is, because it is the equanimity of formations, it is a ground of many virtues, so there is no completely pure equanimity, because afflictions arise universally, therefore it is universally deluded, and there is no completely pure mindfulness. Some say that extremely tamed equanimity is a vast arising. According to those who think that joy and faith and mindfulness and awareness are also limbs in afflictions, the first and third dhyanas are four limbs, and the second and fourth dhyanas are three limbs. It is said that the third dhyana is faulty, and the word "is" is used to summarize the previous reasoning, that is, it also has limbs, so the word "is" is said. The four, such as pleasure, are the faults of meditation, that is, suffering.

English
It is because of abandoning the unwholesome body. As for "by investigation and analysis, joy, and bliss, etc.," how the first three dhyanas are shaken by investigation and so on. The first dhyana is shaken by investigation and analysis, the second is shaken by joy, and the third is shaken by bliss. Thus, the fourth dhyana is not shaken by these. For example, it is like a lamp that is not shaken by the wind. The so-called "bliss of the third aggregate of consciousness" is because there is no smell and taste there, so there is no consciousness of nose and tongue. The so-called "because there is no other aggregate of consciousness" is because there is no consciousness of eye, etc. If that is not there, then investigation and analysis are not there. Because they are always accompanied by investigation and analysis. If there are the second dhyana and so on, it is said in detail that if there are the second dhyana and so on, the sense bases of form, sound, and touch are the objects, and there is a mind that causes consciousness to arise, then, precisely because of this, it is said "those born in them" and so on. As for "it is not one's own ground," then what is it? It is said that they manifest the ground of the first dhyana. As for "like a mind of emanation," just as those who are born in a higher ground consider the emanation of the lower ground to be an emanation, they manifest the mind of emanation of the lower ground, similarly, those who are born in the second dhyana and so on, who consider form, sound, and touch to be objects, and who consider causing consciousness to arise, they manifest the eye consciousness and so on of the ground of the first dhyana, and causing consciousness to arise. The word "etc." in "pure ones, etc." includes the undefiled and the afflicted. As for "being detached from desire from the lower ground," for example, being detached from desire from the desire realm, being detached from desire from the first dhyana up to the realm of nothingness, from the peak of existence, except for the part that is in accordance with appropriate attention, like obtaining the three kinds of pure ones, etc. As for "born from the lower ground," for example, dying from the peak of existence.
