If it is said that it is because (the sutra) says that it possesses these (five branches). No, the (answer) called "No" will appear in detail. Because (the sutra) speaks considering the tangible and the body's consciousness other than these, there is no contradiction. If it is said, "Because pleasure and joy do not occur simultaneously," then pleasure and mental pleasure do not exist simultaneously, because the body and mind's consciousness do not arise simultaneously. Therefore, (the first dhyana) will not become five branches. (The question) called "Therefore, it will not become five branches." No, because it is spoken of in terms of existence, there is no contradiction with the establishment of (the five branches), because it is spoken of in terms of existence. What is called "like seeking and examining" is, for example, although seeking and examining do not arise simultaneously, if it is spoken of in terms of existence, it is like saying "possessing seeking and possessing examining." If it is said, "It needs to be established," then seeking and examining enter sequentially. It is not simultaneous, that is, it needs to be established, or rather, the five exist in their respective categories, so they are five branches, but the five do not exist simultaneously, this statement needs to be established. This is established, because the mind's coarseness and subtlety arise after mutually subduing each other, so it is impossible to exist simultaneously, and coarseness and subtlety are also mutually dependent due to the difference in ground and aspect, therefore, seeking and examining will exist up to the peak of existence, which has been explained in detail in the second chapter of the Abhidharmakosha. Therefore, the five branches existing in the first dhyana, namely seeking, examining, joy, pleasure, and concentration, are precisely from these that two, three, and four branches are abandoned. Among them, after abandoning two branches, the second dhyana is established, because there is no seeking and examining there. After abandoning three branches, the third dhyana is established, because there is no joy there either. After abandoning four branches, the fourth dhyana is established, because there is no pleasure there either. Precisely because of this, after abandoning these, the remaining dhyanas are established. Although there are other mental events in the first dhyana, only the five are said to be branches, while feeling and so on are not. After abandoning feeling and so on, higher dhyanas are established.

Establishment is not, because all of them exist. Therefore, in the first dhyana, they are not said to be limbs. And the question of why is, if you do not want this meaning, you should state another reason. If it is said to be for the sake of benefit, it is said that because of the purity of mindfulness and so on, investigation and so on are beneficial, and the other reason is stated, that mindfulness and wisdom are extremely beneficial. How are mindfulness and wisdom, investigation and analysis are not as beneficial, because mindfulness is well established, and as it is known, there is no timidity or agitation in wisdom. For what reason, although mindfulness and wisdom are beneficial, they are not said to be limbs, therefore, because investigation and so on are beneficial, they are not said to be limbs of the first dhyana, if so, what is it? It is for the sake of abandoning the two limbs, three limbs, and four limbs, and establishing the second dhyana and so on. Some argue in this way, saying that if investigation and analysis are more beneficial than mindfulness and wisdom, why are they not mentioned? This shows that one has not realized it oneself. The teachers of the past, those who speak extensively, say that all those realizations are not limbs, if so, what is it? Only a small part of mental factors are limbs, because one's own happiness, the elders and others hold the five limbs and so on. It is enough to arise incidentally. It is said that the continuum turns extremely peacefully, that is, because the mind was not focused on the object due to the disturbance of investigation and analysis, by being free from investigation and analysis, the object is extremely equally placed, therefore, by being free from the disturbance of investigation and analysis, it dwells extremely tamely. The Vaibhashikas say: Extreme tameness is faith. Because extreme tameness is faith, extreme tameness is faith, it is for the sake of attaining the second dhyana, and the thought of definitely arising arises in the lands of renunciation and samadhi, this is the inner extreme tameness here. Therefore, faith is a multi-part virtuous ground, so although it exists everywhere, it is only in the second dhyana.
