These are the dharmas other than the explanation. Are the limbs that are in the third dhyana also in the fourth dhyana? Answer: four possibilities. The first possibility is the limbs of the third dhyana other than samadhi. The second possibility is the limbs of the fourth dhyana other than samadhi. The third is samadhi. The fourth is the dharmas other than the explanation. Assuming that there is pleasant feeling in all three dhyanas, the question is: why is the pleasure in the third dhyana said to be something else? It means that it is thought that it is not in the second dhyana. Also, how is the pleasure in the third dhyana said to be something else? Because for the third, equanimity, mindfulness, clear knowing, and pleasure are mentioned. In the first, it is said to be very pleasant, pleasure is of two kinds: very pleasant and pleasant feeling. Among them, in the first and second dhyanas, this very pleasant pleasure is explained, but in the third dhyana, pleasant feeling is explained as a limb, therefore the pleasure of the third dhyana is said to be something other than the pleasure of the first and second dhyanas. For this, there are statements such as "it is very pleasant". The reason for this is: because in the second dhyana of absorption, there is no faculty of pleasure. So, is that the basis of body or mind? Both are impossible there. The body is born together with the five consciousnesses, but for those who are absorbed, eye consciousness etc. do not occur, because they are looking outwards. Therefore, there cannot be mental pleasure there either. Why? Because joy appears. The mental pleasure that exists there is called joy. If it is thought that joy is only another dharma other than feeling, and pleasure is the peaceful feeling that exists in the third dhyana, therefore it is said "joy is mental pleasure", joy cannot be determined to be separate from mental pleasure, and pleasure and mental pleasure do not exist simultaneously, because they are feelings.

English

Because the two cannot simultaneously exist in one mind. What is meant by "the two by name" refers to pleasure and joy. What is meant by "because five limbs appear" refers to the fact that if pleasure and joy appear under different names, then it will only become a limb of the fourth dhyana, not the fifth, because it is impossible for either pleasure or joy to exist in each moment. Others say that the faculty of pleasure arising from the mind does not exist, that the faculty of pleasure exists only in the body and not in the mind. The pacified feeling of the mind is the faculty of joy. If the faculty of pleasure is not of the mind, then how is pleasure established as a limb in the third dhyana? Therefore, it is explained in detail that in all three dhyanas, the pleasure of extreme pliancy is not a limb in the first two dhyanas, and the pleasure of the mind is not in the third, so what is it? It is said that in all three dhyanas, only the pleasure of the body is established as a limb. Then, this statement from the sutras contradicts the statement that there is no faculty of pleasure in the mind. How does it contradict? Because just like the pleasure of the body, the pleasure of the mind is also said to be the faculty of the mind. Some say that this statement is fabricated, which one is fabricated? It is the statement "arising from the mind." How do we know that this is fabricated and not canonical? Because in all other schools, it is said "of the body," so we know that it is fabricated, therefore there is no contradiction with the sutras. What is meant by "the body experiences pleasure" refers to the third dhyana, because it is said in one's own words, so we know that it is only the pleasure of the body. If it is said to be "the body of the mind," then why is the word "body" not accepted here as referring to the faculty of the body, then what is it? It is the body of the mind, just like the six feelings, the word "body" is also seen for formless phenomena. Therefore, one should know that it is the body of the mind, what merit is there in saying this? It is clearly stated that "the mind experiences pleasure."
