The power of happiness ceases. After that, nothing arising from the mind will completely reverse, they say. What is the meaning of 'limb'? Because it clearly manifests the first dhyana and so on up to the fourth, it is a limb, meaning to symbolize, to manifest. Or, the meaning of 'limb' is conformity, and those also conform to their own ground, so they are limbs. Or, the word 'limb' is used for collections, like the limbs of an offering, because these are mutually collected, so they are limbs. Samadhi is both a limb and a dhyana. The rest are limbs, referring to realization and so on. Just as the limbs of a four-limbed army do not become other things, the five-limbed dhyana is also similar to that, because here it is taught in relation to the collection, so it does not become other things. The Vaibhashikas say that it is taught because of mainly speaking about samadhi. Those grounds are the main part of samadhi, because the sutra says that the power of samadhi should be observed in the four dhyanas, they say. The third dhyana has five limbs, that is to say, the equanimity of action in it is without attachment to the joy of the second dhyana's ground. Mindfulness is not forgetting the reason for equanimity, in a way that is not far away. Vigilance is in the way of guarding. What is called pure equanimity, the purity of equanimity is pure equanimity, because it is free from the faults of the lower grounds. The faults are eight, such as investigation, analysis, and joy, and those will be explained. Pure mindfulness is the same as that, because it is free from faults. What is called a first dhyana practitioner, one who exists in the first dhyana is a first dhyana practitioner. The reason for saying that is that the second dhyana has inner extreme clarity that is more excellent, the third dhyana has equanimity, mindfulness, vigilance, and happiness that are more excellent, the fourth dhyana has a feeling that is neither happiness nor suffering that is more excellent, there is no difference between joy and happiness in the first and second dhyanas, and in the third and fourth dhyanas

I and equanimity and mindfulness are without difference, and all four are without difference from samadhi. Therefore it is said: Which limbs are present in the first dhyana, are those also present in the second? There are four possibilities: The first possibility is conceptualization and analysis, because they are only present in the first dhyana, and not in the second. The "inner clarity" that is not present in the second is that which is only present in the second, and not in the first. The third possibility is joy and happiness and one-pointedness of mind, because they are present in both. The fourth possibility is the dharmas other than explanation, which refers to those dharmas other than explanation, which are not limbs of the first dhyana, nor limbs of the second. Similarly, all the limbs of dhyana should be combined with each other. Which limbs are present in the first dhyana, are those also present in the third? There are four possibilities: The first possibility is conceptualization and analysis, joy and happiness. The second possibility is equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, and happiness. The third possibility is samadhi. The fourth possibility is the dharmas other than explanation. Which limbs are present in the first dhyana, are those also present in the fourth? There are four possibilities: The first possibility is conceptualization and analysis, joy and happiness. The second possibility is the feeling of neither pleasure nor pain, and pure equanimity and pure mindfulness. The third possibility is samadhi.
