If it is said that because it is spoken without distinction, it should not be analyzed, then, in the Sutra, from "Venerable Mahākauṣṭhilya, what is life, what is warmth," and extensively, "consciousness turns into form and abides," this is spoken without distinction. If it is thought that the Sutra's words refer to the life that operates in the desire realm and the form realm, and up to "if all of that is not there, then it is prevented," no distinction is made. If it is said that because it is spoken without distinction, it should not be analyzed, then, that would be too extreme. Why? Because even external warmth, which is not considered sentient, would not fail to arise without life. Why? Because it is spoken without distinction. There, life and what is considered sentient are mixed, and no distinction is made. External forms, such as trees and walls, which are not considered sentient, would also become dependent on name, because it is spoken without distinction. There, it is not said that name and the form of what is considered sentient mutually rely on each other and abide. Therefore, like name, form is also spoken without distinction, so it would become the fault of grasping everything. Like the four abodes of consciousness, it is extensively explained as follows: If, because the four abodes of consciousness are spoken without distinction, just as it is thought that there is form in the formless realm, then, because the four foods are spoken, just like the desire realm, in the form and formless realms as well, there would be the fault of the existence of coarse food. Why? Because it is spoken without distinction. It is also said in the Sutra, "The four foods cause sentient beings to arise and abide, and benefit those who seek existence." Because it is spoken without distinction, like contact and so on, coarse food would also become the fault of all existing. If it is thought that in the general indication that "the four foods cause sentient beings to arise and abide," there is a specific designation, then, starting from "transcending the heavens," it is extensively explained, if that were the case, then there would also be no fault in the formless realm, because there is form. Why?

Why is that? It is for the sake of being exceptional. The very demonstration of being exceptional is that formless things necessarily arise from forms, which is explained in detail. If a form were to arise from the absorptions and births of the formless realm, then beings with form would inevitably recognize their own forms, and thus they would not truly transcend the perception of form. Those things would not necessarily arise from forms, nor would they transcend forms. If there is form, then those born there cannot be called formless, therefore it is understood that there is form there. The form belonging to the formless realm, the lower level is coarse, while the practice in the formless realm is subtle. Therefore, considering the coarse form, the formless things necessarily arise from forms. If someone asks, what are the peaceful liberations of the formless realm, this is explained in detail. It is the same with edible food. Transcending the gods who eat edible food means that it is spoken with regard to the coarse edible food of the lower realm, not its subtle part. If it is argued that because it necessarily arises from the coarse form of the lower realm, therefore it is formless, then in that case, the dhyanas should also be so. For example, the first dhyana necessarily arises from the coarse form practiced in the desire realm, and similarly, the fourth dhyana necessarily arises from the coarse form of the third dhyana, therefore it would become formless. If it is said that it is coarse in relation to the upper realm, then in that case, only the peak of existence would be formless. If it is said that even though there is form in one's own level, the formless ones are said to necessarily arise because they necessarily arise from the form of the lower level, then if that is the case, why is it not said that they necessarily arise from feeling and so on? Those also necessarily arise from feeling and so on, just like the form of the lower level. The word "etcetera" includes perception, formation, and consciousness. Form
