and individually and correctly knowing and so forth, and individually the individuals and the common manifest knowledge, and the dhyana and the formless and so forth can be obtained, this is generally said. Those are also the nature of knowledge and other natures. Among them, the nature of knowledge from power and so forth to manifest knowledge, those have already been discussed in the chapter on knowledge itself. Regarding that, "Knowledge is with outflows and without outflows." Such as this and so forth, it is taken as the purpose of extensively explaining knowledge. Then, in relation to knowledge, only its own qualities of nature are discussed, but not other natures, this is the meaning of the term called dhyana and so forth. Or, through the word "also", the nature of non-ignorance is extensively explained, and now the nature of non-attachment and non-anger, namely dhyana and the formless, will be discussed. Regarding that, first starting from the dhyana, because it is the main one. How is it the main one? Therefore, it is said that it is the basis of all qualities. The formless ones are also indeed the basis of qualities, but, "The five are in the four dhyanas." Because it is said like that, it is not the basis of all qualities, therefore those were not mentioned earlier. Also because they arise after the end of bliss, showing the formless ones is in accordance with arising. Dhyana are of two kinds, this is in terms of the difference between the dhyana of cause and effect. Therefore, the difference between the dhyana of arising and meditative absorption is mentioned. Among them, the dhyana of arising is the result. The dhyana of meditative absorption is the cause. Virtuous one-pointedness, this is the common characteristic of the dhyana of meditative absorption. Because there is also one-pointedness that is afflicted and unspecified, therefore "virtuous" is mentioned. Because there is also virtue that is distracted, therefore "one-pointed" is mentioned. Mind is one-pointed, that is dhyana, there the mental factors are not mentioned because mind is the main one. Because it is the nature of samadhi, it is said that dhyana are of the nature of one-pointedness. Followers

That which is called "the five aggregates," if one seeks the nature of the meditative absorptions of equipoise, then its nature is the single-pointed virtue itself, because the meditative absorptions are the nature of samadhi. However, if one wishes to speak of that which is accompanied by its retinue, then it is therefore the nature of the five aggregates, because there is form that follows. If it is said that single-pointed virtuous mind is meditative absorption, then that is not certain, therefore one asks, "What is this 'single-pointed'?" "Single-pointedness of object" means that it is synonymous with "oneness of object." If that is the case, then "oh, then" arises in detail, if single-pointedness is the very oneness of object, then the mind is single-pointed, and only those that are not distracted and are equally placed are samadhi, but other phenomena arising from the mind are not, because single-pointedness of object is not other than the mind, because the mind itself is distracted. In the detailed appearance of "mind alone," minds do not have the ability to engage in a single object, because it would become without distraction. Therefore, just like distraction, the single-pointedness of object of minds is also not born from its own nature, therefore minds alone are not samadhi, but the dharma that makes them single-pointed is samadhi. That itself is single-pointedness, because it possesses samadhi, those minds become single-pointed, therefore, only samadhi makes the mind single-pointed, but not the minds themselves. Since it is momentary, are all minds single-pointed or not? This is called, all minds are single-pointed, because they are momentary, they are the object and there is no change. Therefore, for the mind, it is meaningless to fully realize samadhi. Because all virtuous minds would become equally placed. If the second mind is not distracted from that, this is called, the second mind is similar to the previous mind, possessing the power of samadhi, it is the object of the first mind.

It is said that there is no fault because one is not distracted. If it is said that equalizing samadhi is meaningless, then the first mind that arises equally with samadhi, that samadhi is meaningless, because it does not act. What alone is samadhi? In the extensive explanation, if it is like the mind, by the power of samadhi, the former and latter are completely realized as being of one object. There is no other samadhi in samadhi. Therefore, in all samadhis, one should accept that there is a habituation different from samadhi, or a single-pointedness different from others. Whatever habituation etc. is solely the single-pointedness of samadhi, solely from this the mind also becomes one object, therefore the samadhi that becomes a different thing is meaningless. Because samadhi is of many grounds, if it is said that by the power of samadhi arising equally with the previous mind, the subsequent mind is not distracted from the object of the previous mind. If so, because samadhi is of many grounds, all minds should become single-pointed. It is not so, because the power of samadhi is small. All minds should not become single-pointed. Why? Because the power of samadhi is small. A samadhi with power makes the second mind not distracted from the object of the first mind, but not one with small power. And not all samadhis have equal power. Therefore, although samadhi is of many grounds, all minds should not become single-pointed. Only samadhi is said to be meditation because the mind and mental factors are able to enter the continuum of virtue, not all. Is only the single-pointed mind samadhi? It is not different in meaning. Like this, why is it? The training in higher mind, the extensive explanation, the sutra says that the training in higher mind and the chief of mental purification are the four dhyanas. Therefore, only the single-pointed mind is samadhi, like the training in higher morality
