If it is focused on that, then there are six consciousnesses: dharma, following, cessation, exhaustion, non-arising, and conventional consciousnesses. However, if it exists in the continuum of one who has exhausted defilements, then there are ten consciousnesses. Similarly, it should also be known that this is all-pervasive. 'It should also be known' means that just as the power of knowing the exhaustion of defilements is all-pervasive, so too should it be understood that the direct perception of knowing the exhaustion of defilements is also all-pervasive. The five direct perceptions are the place of the four dhyanas, meaning other than the direct perception of the exhaustion of defilements. For the time being, three are not present, because they focus on form, meaning the direct perceptions of magical power, the eye, and the ear, these three focus on form. Those without form do not focus on form, because they are separated from the perception of form. Because it is to be accomplished directly by relying on form, it means that it is to be accomplished through the gateway of form, which is a synonym for saying that it is to be accomplished through the path that focuses on form. Gradually remembering previous other states, it means that because one gradually remembers other states in the desire realm, one cultivates. Those without form also do not focus on the desire realm. Because they focus on places and times, etc., it means that places and times, etc., appropriately exist in the desire realm or the form realm, but not in the formless realm. The entities of the formless realm do not focus on the lower realm, nor do they focus on form. If that is the case, then the approximations of meditation and the approximations of the first formless state should also become focused on form, because they have form as their object. Answer: It is not like that, because only that which is completely grasped by the limb of samadhi is the basis of direct perception, and this does not exist in the approximations of the formless state, so there is no direct perception there. If that is the case, then there will be no direct perception of the exhaustion of defilements in those places. Answer: No, because the consciousness of all grounds is able to focus on the consciousness of the exhaustion of defilements.
