And the paths of union, liberation, and distinction, etc., and what exists in the actual paths of liberation such as the first dhyana, is only the discipline of dhyana, not the discipline of abandonment. Because they do not abandon the violated precepts and the afflictions that arise from them. The second is the discipline of no outflow in the nine unobstructed paths of liberation. This is the discipline of abandonment, because it is for abandoning the violated precepts, etc. It is not the discipline of dhyana, because it is without outflow. The third is what is with outflow in the unobstructed paths of liberation. This is both the discipline of abandonment, because they abandon the violated precepts, etc., and it is also the discipline of dhyana, because they arise from the concentration with outflow. The fourth is the discipline without outflow other than the unobstructed path of liberation. This is neither the discipline of dhyana, because it is without outflow, nor is it the discipline of abandonment, because it does not abandon the violated precepts, etc. The meaning of "as appropriate" is that the reasoning of the four alternatives should be understood in this way. How should it be understood? That is, there are those that are disciplines without outflow but are not disciplines of abandonment; there are those that are disciplines of abandonment but are not disciplines without outflow; there are those that are both; and there are those that are neither. The first case is the discipline without outflow other than the unobstructed path of liberation. The second case is the discipline of dhyana that arises in the unobstructed path of liberation. The third case is the discipline without outflow that exists in the unobstructed paths of liberation. The fourth case is all the disciplines of dhyana other than the unobstructed path of liberation. "The discipline of the body is good, the discipline of speech is good," there, if one knows that the disciplines of body and speech are the nature of non-revealing form, then "the discipline of mind is good," and what is said in "dwelling guarded by the restraint of the eye faculty," what are these disciplines of mind and faculty?

Yet, it is not known to be its own nature. Furthermore, how is it known that the discipline of the mind and senses is the nature of mindfulness and awareness? It is known from the scriptures, as it is said in the sutras: "Having seen forms with the eye, the mind does not turn to pleasure, nor does it turn to displeasure. Possessing mindfulness and awareness, one abides in equanimity." And so on, up to "Having known dharmas with the mind." It is also said: "What customs are there in this world that are prevented by mindfulness? The discipline of that should be explained, and then it is prevented by awareness." Thus it is said. Furthermore, a certain deity said to a certain bhikshu who was wandering in the realms of the senses: "Bhikshu, bhikshu, do not inflict wounds!" The bhikshu said: "Deity, it should be prevented." The deity said: "Bhikshu, if only a small wound arises, what is prevented?" The bhikshu said: "It should be prevented by mindfulness and awareness." Thus it is said. From individual liberation until as long as it is not abandoned, it is constant in the present. In this regard, abiding in the discipline of individual liberation, in the first moment, it is in accordance with that very present, but not with the past and future. In the second moment and so on, it is in accordance with that present and the past, but not with the future. "As long as the non-manifesting form is not abandoned" refers to the cause of abandonment that will be explained, such as offering the precepts of learning. "After the first moment, with the past" means that in the first moment, it is only in accordance with the present, and afterwards, until it is not abandoned, it is in accordance with the two times. One who possesses the discipline of meditative concentration is constant. In this regard, one who has obtained the discipline of meditative concentration is constantly in accordance with the non-manifesting form of the past and future, but not with the present. Only when one is in absorption is one in accordance with the present, because the discipline of meditative concentration follows the mind. If one asks how the discipline of meditative concentration is in accordance with the past in the first moment, therefore, it is extensively explained that it is in the first moment. Except for that which is in accordance with the aspect of ascertainment, because that is obtained in other lifetimes and will not be abandoned. Noble.
