If not, how is it known to be with attachment? If one holds that it is with attachment, how does this not contradict the statement that each object is a place of enjoyment? It is said that it is like not holding clothes and dirt at the same time. Like clothes and dirt are not held at the same time, that is, when one sees clothes, one does not see dirt; when one sees dirt, one does not see clothes. The statement that clothes and dirt are not held at the same time is said in terms of the state of complete cessation. The nature of having attachment is of two kinds, this is explained in detail. The nature of mixed attachment arises from manifestation, that is, mixed, co-equal, and co-arisen are the same meaning. The nature of having attachment arises from attainment and association, that is, attainment, acquisition, and possession are not different in meaning. From this, it is explained in detail, that the mind co-equal with attachment, that is, in whatever mind attachment manifests, that mind is with attachment by both mixed attachment and having attachment. Other than that, the remaining defiled mind, which is unobscured and indeterminate, and worldly virtue, is having attachment, because it is only together with the attainment of attachment. Therefore, these two should also be shown as having attachment. Thus, abiding and some say that here the mind co-equal with attachment is with attachment, the remaining defiled mind, which is only together with attainment, is not, and the antidote to attachment is detachment. Furthermore, why, according to some, is the antidote to attachment said to be detachment, and not that which is not co-equal with attachment is not detachment? Those who say this state the reason, if not co-equal with attachment, in whatever mind there is no attachment, and only the attainment of it exists, if that is detachment, then it is co-equal with other afflictions, that is, co-equal with afflictions such as anger.

It will also be with concentration. Why? Because it does not correspond to desire. The sutra does not say that being in accordance with hatred, etc., is being free from desire. So what does it say? It says being with hatred, being with ignorance. As I see it, the (mind) that is the antidote to desire does not correspond to hatred, etc., so I do not consider being in accordance with other afflictions besides that to be free from desire. Therefore, there is no fault in this. Here, the teacher has stated other faults. Others say, if that is the case, if being in accordance with desire is being with desire, and the antidote to desire is being free from desire, then the non-afflicted mind that is not its antidote is neither with desire nor free from desire, because of being obscured and unspecified, and the virtue other than the path of immediate result is not in accordance with desire, so it is not with desire, and because it is not the antidote to desire, it is not free from desire. What is not its antidote? It is the path of application, etc. The word "etc." indicates that being with hatred and being with ignorance will also be equally faulty there. Therefore, here, saying "having desire" means that desire increases. The word "also" indicates that here, merely being in accordance with desire should also be considered as a mind with desire. If that is the case, defiled and non-afflicted will also be included as being with desire. Complete concentration is virtuous because of the concentration on the object. The virtuous mind is concentrated on the object and does not wander from the object, because it corresponds to non-wandering. Complete concentration is corresponding to concentration itself, in order to concentrate the objects of the five senses. Distraction is another affliction.

The so-called "No" is an affliction similar to sleep. The so-called "because it is similar to afflicted sleep" means that the mind is distracted because it is similar to affliction, and it is gathered because it is similar to sleep. It is unreasonable for contradictions to appear in one. The so-called "it is said in the scriptures" means that if gathering is similar to sleep, it will contradict the scriptures. How does it contradict? The sutra says, "The mind can also truly know when it is gathered," just like the extensive explanation. How can subsequent wisdom be based on gathering? Because there is no sleep above the desire realm, and subsequent wisdom is also based on form and formlessness. Path wisdom will also not be based on the gathered mind. Why? Because path wisdom is based on the path, and sleep is completely tainted. The mind gathered by the path is also not similar to sleep. Gathering is because it is clearly gathered on the object, as mentioned earlier, so there is no fault as mentioned. Because that is not a gathering similar to afflicted sleep, nor will it be distracted. It does not contradict the scriptures either, because the gathering of wholesome mind is included and not included in the three realms, so it can be established that the wisdom of the gathering mind is four kinds of wisdom. Subsequent wisdom is based on the wholesome mind of form and formlessness, and the path wisdom mentioned by the truth of the path is based on the wholesome mind of uncontaminated wisdom. The so-called "because it is similar to laziness" is because it is the nature of not being diligent. The so-called "diligence" is similar to diligence, because diligence is a different name for diligence. The so-called "because those who have reduced purity rely on it" refers to those beings who have bodies with reduced purity, that is, reduced purity.
