What is it? The term "if he becomes a learner" means falling away from the state of an Arhat. It means that only those who abide in that state and cultivate it, and not others, can fall away. One who has the nature of falling away, who has the potential to realize through subduing the senses, is qualified to be a learner, and if he falls away from that state, he no longer abides in a state contrary to the norm, from the immovable lineage to the lineage of those who contemplate death. Then where does he abide? He abides only in the lineage of those who have the nature of falling away. The term "if it is not so" means if he abides in another lineage. The term "for the sake of obtaining a special lineage" means that that lineage is superior to the lineage of falling away. Therefore, if one falls away from the state of an Arhat, he will undoubtedly also fall away from the state attained through subduing the senses. Why is it said that there is no falling away from the first fruit? Because for those who are gradually progressing, those who have not abandoned desire, those who have abandoned desire in the desire realm, and for the fruits of stream-enterer, once-returner, and non-returner, there is no falling away. The term "things to be abandoned by seeing, because they have no basis" means because they have no support, because they are focused on how things are conceptually constructed. The term "these arise from the basis of self" means that things to be abandoned by seeing arise dependent on self. Why? Because it is said, "because they have the root of the view of the aggregates." Thus, things to be abandoned by seeing arise entirely due to clinging to self, and all the various views in the world are based on the view of the aggregates. The term "that self also does not exist" means that because it has no basis, there is no falling away. If it is said, "then it will focus on non-existence," it is because there is no substance of self. The term "because it focuses on truth" means that in the truths of suffering and so on, it grasps permanence and so on. The term "because it focuses perversely" means that in the suffering of the body, it clings to self. If it is not so, afflictions
