If asked: Then, (in the sutra) it is said, "There are also three kinds of mindfulness." "The others are from connection and object." What does this mean? It means that mindfulness arises from connection and object. How is it understood? (In the sutra) it is said, "The others arise together with it," referring to feelings and so on that arise together with wisdom. Why are mind and feelings not mentioned? Because mind and feelings are both covered by the mindfulness of the object. How are other mindfulnesses of connection spoken of? It is said in the sutra: "Monks, all dharmas," this phrase is another name for the four mindfulnesses. Mindfulness that arises through connection is mindfulness of connection, because it is related to the mindfulness of self-nature. What is meant by "their objects" is that the objects of wisdom and those dharmas that arise together with it, such as the body, are called the mindfulness of the object. As for "observing the body in the body," etc., observation itself is mindfulness, so observation is mindfulness. "He who possesses it observes" is a synonym for "possessing wisdom." Because he observes, it is called observation. As for "dwelling observing the body in the body," etc., here there is observation, and because there is the wisdom of observation, there is observation, etc. This is another way of expressing it shown in the sutra. As for "because of entering by generating the power of mindfulness," generating power is generating power. Generating the power of mindfulness is generating the power of mindfulness. Because this wisdom has entering by generating the power of mindfulness, it is entering by generating the power of mindfulness. Its essence is entering by generating the power of mindfulness, therefore it is said so. As for "like a child climbing a tree holding onto the tree," it is like a child climbing a tree holding onto the tree. If mindfulness grasps the object, then wisdom will fully understand it. Therefore, if mindfulness abides, then wisdom is mindfulness.

Thus, the term "it is permissible in this way" refers to the perspective of engaging in practice. Therefore, it is said, "Therefore, by this, one establishes mindfulness." How does wisdom establish mindfulness? Therefore, it is said, "In order to clearly express what is seen," meaning that contemplation is mindfulness itself, arising from the power of wisdom and entering into it. Manifestation is thus remembering. And where does it abide closely? In the body and in the Dharma. Therefore, the connection of words is: establishing mindfulness on the body is body mindfulness, and so on. Having made the agent into the object, the meaning of establishing mindfulness as it appears in the sutras has been explained. From where does it arise and is explained extensively? With the arising of food, body mindfulness arises; with the cessation of food, body mindfulness ceases. With the arising of contact, feeling arises; with the cessation of contact, contact mindfulness ceases. With the arising of name and form, mind mindfulness arises, and so on, as before. With the arising of attention, Dharma mindfulness arises, and so on, also as before. Furthermore, how is this the mindfulness of the object? It is said, "Because mindfulness abides closely in this," because it abides closely in this, therefore it is abiding. If it is not considered that the sutra is the mindfulness of the object, then, bhikkhus, how are the four mindfulnesses, from "with the arising of food," and so on, why would it be said? The body and so on are not the nature of wisdom, nor are they the nature of feeling and so on. The names of these are like the object, meaning that the objects of these mindfulnesses are the body and so on, therefore it is said body mindfulness and so on. Because these are focused on one's own and others' continuums, each has three aspects.

, and it is due to focusing on the continuity of both. If you ask: How does it say? It says, being diligent, knowledgeable, and mindful, having abandoned covetousness and displeasure towards the world, one dwells contemplating the body in the inner body. And similarly, one dwells contemplating the body in the outer body, as mentioned before. One dwells contemplating the body in the inner and outer body, as mentioned before. Thus, this method has three aspects. For the feeling mindfulness and so on, it should be applied in the same way. The reason for saying that one sees the gross object first is that the body is composed of the four great elements and what is derived from the four great elements, so it is gross, therefore it is seen first. Then comes feeling, because its aspect is gross. After that comes the mind, because it is easy to represent the dharmas in the form of individual distinctions. Dharma is very subtle, because there are distinctions such as conditioned and unconditioned, and associated and unassociated, and so on. Or it is thought like this, the basis for attachment to desire is the body, which is synonymous with saying that the object of focus is the body. As it is said in the sutras: Monks, being attached to the form of women, being bound by desire, and so on. This "also" refers to attachment to desire. This "also", mind refers to the feeling that manifests desire. The mind is not pacified because afflictions have not been abandoned, because afflictions are included in the realm of dharmas. In order, body mindfulness is shown as the antidote to the perversion of purity, because the body, like phlegm, is of an impure nature. The remaining dharmas are impure because they are related to this, like a rag clinging to dust. Feeling mindfulness is the antidote to the perversion of happiness, because whatever is felt, it is said here to be suffering. Mind mindfulness is the antidote to the perversion of permanence, because the mind changes rapidly. Dharma mindfulness is shown as the antidote to the perversion of self. Dharmas, through the method of distinguishing as a whole, this is merely dharma.
