Illusion, flattery, drowsiness, agitation, and arrogance, etc. These are all mental afflictions. Sleep and pride, all five of these are mental afflictions, but unlike desire and so on, they are not associated with the six consciousnesses. The independent near afflictions are also like this, namely jealousy, stinginess, regret, anger, concealment, and the stains of affliction. What are those that are taught within the many grounds of affliction? Namely, carelessness, laziness, and lack of faith; all of these should be understood as relying on the six consciousnesses. Ignorance, drowsiness, and agitation have already been taught, so they are not repeated. Because of entering into the state of joy and sorrow, the state of joy and the state of sorrow are the states of joy and sorrow. Attachment and hatred have the manner of entering into these, namely entering into the state of joy and sorrow, and its object is the very entering into the state of joy and sorrow, therefore attachment and hatred are associated with pleasure and pain. Because of being similar and because it is the sixth collection of consciousness, attachment is associated with pleasure and pleasantness, and hatred is associated with suffering and unpleasantness. Of those with virtuous karma and those with sinful karma, etc., for those with virtuous karma, it is unpleasantness, and for those with sinful karma, it is pleasantness. The four views, namely, excluding wrong views. How is the view of annihilation associated with pleasantness? Because it is desired to manifest. Born from desire, namely, because there is no suffering and unpleasantness other than that, and because there is no anger. For the time being, having thus separately and definitively explained these subtle distinctions, associated with the pleasure of suffering through the distinction of the states of joy and sorrow, generally speaking, it is said that the power of equanimity arises from the increase of ignorance.

And, ignorance also has the same characteristics as all afflictions. Furthermore, all afflictions cease before they are completely transformed, which is why it is said, "at the time of cutting off the continuum." Isn't equanimity without the aspects of joy and sorrow? Therefore, how can it have the same characteristics as joy and sorrow? Therefore, the word "saying" means displeasure. The Vaibhashikas say that because there is no contradiction, it is like a fair person. Regarding the question of "how many faculties are there in one's own realm," where are there how many faculties? In the meditations of rebirth: mental pleasure and equanimity, equanimity, mental pleasure, and pleasure, equanimity, equanimity, feeling exist. This will be explained later. There, also appropriately, the four aggregates of consciousness, in the first dhyana, because there is no consciousness of nose and tongue, there is pleasure of the three aggregates of consciousness, equanimity is the fourth aggregate of consciousness, and mental pleasure is the consciousness of mind. Above that, appropriately, there are all aggregates of mental consciousness. Among them, in the second dhyana, there are mental pleasure and equanimity. In the third, there are pleasure and equanimity. Above that, there is only equanimity. These are because they enter into the aspect of sorrow and are the realm of mind, which are two distinctions to eliminate mental pleasure and the faculty of suffering. Those and pride will arise. How can pride be the realm of mind and have the same characteristics as the faculty of pleasure? Therefore, it is said that in the third dhyana, it has the same characteristics as pleasure. Regarding being like ignorance, for any affliction or near affliction, there is no obstruction to having the same characteristics, and equanimity is also the same. Because it is the multiple ground of non-virtue, it is shamelessness and lack of embarrassment. Because it is the multiple ground of affliction, it is lethargy and agitation.

and, because non-virtue and afflictions exist in the six aggregates of consciousness, therefore, it is said in the sutra that they are the same as all five faculties. The sutra elaborates on "desire and longing for desire" and so on. The Blessed One said, "Monks, the five obscurations are the aggregates of non-virtue." Those words will be spoken when speaking correctly. Why is that? Monks, this is a complete aggregate of non-virtue, unmixed, namely the five obscurations. What are the five? Desire and longing for desire, malice, drowsiness, sleep, excitement, regret, and doubt. The sutra elaborates on "what is drowsiness" and so on, namely, drowsiness, excitement, and doubt belong to the three realms, while desire and longing for desire and malice operate in the desire realm. Since these are not distinguished in the sutra, should we take drowsiness, excitement, and doubt as belonging to the three realms, or should we take them as being associated with desire, like desire and longing for desire and malice? This is unclear. Because the statement "this is an aggregate of non-virtue" and so on appears, therefore, although drowsiness, excitement, and doubt themselves belong to the three realms, only those related to desire are considered obscurations. Therefore, drowsiness and excitement are mixed with sleep and regret, in order to make it clear that only drowsiness and excitement operating in the desire realm are obscurations. This also negates that sleep and regret, which are non-afflictions, are the nature of obscurations, because they are mixed with drowsiness and excitement, and they are also a kind of affliction. The term obscuration refers to the meaning of obscuration for dhyana, samadhi, and samapatti. Because incompatibility, food, and function are the same, it is said that the two are one. For example, the food of desire and longing for desire is the sign of ugliness, and non-food is the sign of beauty; the food of malice is the sign of anger, and non-food is loving-kindness; the food of doubt is the three times, for example, doubting the past time and so on, which is elaborated in the sutra. Non-food is the condition.
