And, those who are not of the higher ground. Similarly, mind is of the lower ground, while body and mental consciousness, and phenomena are of the higher ground, that is, when one dies and transmigrates from the desire realm, and then takes rebirth in the form realm, at that time mind is of the lower ground, while body and mental consciousness are of the higher ground. Phenomena are indeterminate, being of that ground, and not of the higher ground, or the emanation mind that operates in the desire realm. This is extensively explained in texts such as the one called "Showing Attainments." In the conclusion of the undefiled: Between the three above and below is good, Likewise from pure individuals, Even the afflictions of one's own ground, From the afflicted, self-purification, And even one purification of lower afflictions, From death and transmigration, all afflictions, From the afflicted, not the higher. It is said: The third of dissimilar kinds goes, Transcendence is attainment. Such and so forth. In the chapter called "Arising Incidentally," what arises incidentally is what arises collaterally, such as "Residing in which body," etc., this comes from "The eye sees forms." Because it has come to the chapter on the distinction of realms, therefore, it is said: "The five external consciousnesses of the two." Saying "five" is for the purpose of clarifying the dharma realm. Saying "external" is for the purpose of clarifying the eye, etc. Because it is only the five external ones that can be known, therefore it is not certain that only the two, such as form, can be known, but it is explained from the Abhidharma as being in the power of existence. It will be established that the remaining thirteen realms, which are definitely apprehended, are to be known by mental consciousness, because they are not the objects of the five. The unconditioned is only permanent, because it is definitely apprehended, therefore it will be known that one part of the dharma realm is permanent, and the remainder and one part of the dharma realm are impermanent. How is it that only the unconditioned is permanent? Because there is no movement in time. It does not have that, because it does not possess the characteristics of the conditioned, such as arising.

If. What are the halves of the Dharma, the powers spoken of within the twelve? It is said that the elements are to be combined with the occasion. In the sutra, the eye power, etc., then the Brahmin Nature Hearer asked the Blessed One, saying: O Gautama, what are the powers? O Gautama, by how many powers are the powers gathered? Brahmin, the powers are these twenty-two. What are the twenty-two? The eye power, the ear power, the nose power, the tongue power, the body power, the mind power, the female power, the male power, the life power, the pleasure power, the suffering power, the mental pleasure power, the mental displeasure power, the equanimity power, the faith power, the diligence power, the mindfulness power, the concentration power, the wisdom power, the unknown to be known power, the known power, and the known and possessed power. Brahmin, these are the twenty-two powers. Are the powers gathered only by these powers? It is said in the sutra that in the distinction of the six sources, the mind power is spoken of after the body power. The Dharma victors, in order to easily show the appearances, did not show the object and did not quote the scriptures, but put the one with outflows in the same order, and then showed the power with the object, that is, the mind power. They are words that are close in meaning, and among the powers that are spoken of, they are one part of the Dharma realm, hence the name half of the Dharma. The life power and other eleven powers, half of the Dharma are the life power, the five feeling powers, the five powers of faith, etc., and the division of the three. Among those with the nature of nine dharmas, such as the unknown to be known power, except for the mind power, the remaining eight dharmas. The five, such as the eye, are spoken of by their own eyes.

English

, the five realms such as the eye are the five faculties, from the eye faculty to the body faculty. The two faculties of male and female are part of the body realm, because there are no other male and female realms. It will be explained below that the male and female faculties arise from the body. The remaining five realms are the realms of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The aspect of the dharma realm that is not a faculty refers to those other than the eleven faculties. The commentary on the Abhidharmakosha composed by Master Purna-vardhana, called "Following the Path of Characteristics," in which the chapter called "Dhatu-nirdesha" is the commentary on the first chapter of the Kosha. Regarding the explanation of the faculties, where is it explained? At the end of the Dhatu-kosha. How is it explained? Through the means of summarizing and differentiating. The verse says: "Half of the dharmas and which ones, the faculties are explained within the twelve." This is the summary. From the eye faculty to the faculty endowed with complete knowledge is the differentiation. Thus, the faculties are explained, and because the meaning of the faculties is not understood, it is asked what the meaning of the faculties is. This is asked in terms of the meaning of the word, not in terms of the meaning of the object, because it is unreasonable to grasp mutually different things as non-different and then establish a name. The meaning of the objects, such as the eye, etc., up to some of the male faculties, is only explained in the first chapter of the Kosha, the life faculty will be explained in the non-associated formations, faith, etc., will be explained in the mental factors, and pleasure, etc., and the non-omniscient faculty, etc., will be shown in this very chapter on faculties. Therefore, it should be known that it is not asked in terms of the meaning of the object. The teacher also only shows the meaning of the word, and completely grasps the meaning of the linguistic expression, that is, "Freedom is supreme freedom." If it were a question about the category of objects, this answer would not be appropriate. Because that is able to be free, therefore it is said that the meaning of this language is form.
