If both see, since the support is completely severed, the consciousness is also completely severed, just like the root of a sentient being, in one instant it becomes two consciousnesses, thus it is a fault. Therefore, it is extensively stated that "the support is completely severed." Why? Because it does not reside on the object. The eye consciousness, like a wooden bowl and sandalwood, resides on the eye with the nature of support and supported. Since those change, it changes, therefore the eye is its support. Therefore, relying on one support, and that is also one, even if there are a hundred eyes, there is no contradiction in generating one consciousness, let alone two? Even if one eye is obscured by eye disease, it would be a fault to generate multiple consciousnesses. Not residing on the object, its support is completely severed, and it is also not completely severed. Like form, it is a dissimilar example. Why is there doubt about whether these are in contact with the object, etc.? Because it is seen that both are imputed. The Blessed One said this: The eye contacts agreeable and disagreeable forms. What is not in contact should not be contacted. Again, it is extensively stated in the sutras that the divine eye sees sentient beings, etc., and it is said which are far and which are near. If it is indeed in contact with the object, there could be no establishment of near and far. Therefore, it is said that the eye, mind, and ear do not contact the object. What can be known? Like this, it is said about form from a distance, from this it can be known that it is not in contact with the object. Eye medicine in the eye is not seen, from this it can be refuted that this is in contact with the object. If it is so, it should be determined that it is only not in contact with the object. Those who rely on and arise, and reside on the object, those who think it is in contact with the object, those are merely thinking, because they simultaneously know near and far. This dharma is also not seen by those who have the characteristics of darkness, etc. The eye is light, like a lamp, near and

If it is said that it is not contradictory for distant things to appear clearly at once, then for those who wish to see, is not the light itself already established for the sake of seeking appearance in the darkness? If it is said that because the light of the eye is weak, one seeks external appearances, then the weak is overwhelmed by the many, and therefore it does not even become an object. This is also not in accordance with the meaning of the analogy, because uninterrupted contact makes things clear. If a lamp burns and illuminates by contacting wood and oil, then the eye, like fire, does not hold onto things that are very close, such as eye medicine. Even when obstructed by crystal and the like, it holds without contacting the object, and because of doubt, the eye does not contact the object. If there is contact, then like a fool, one would not doubt whether a tall object is a person or something else, because oneself is very close to all things. Even if separated by thousands of yojanas, there is still contact and non-contact. Therefore, it is not appropriate to say that once the eyes are opened, they immediately contact the moon. As it is said in the scriptures: If the eye has the ability to move, it will see distant and long-lasting things. If the images of near and far things are the same, then what is the meaning of that? If the eye needs to move when seeing an image, then what is the use of moving? If the thing to be seen is certain, then the word "wanting" becomes meaningless. Therefore, the eye does not actually contact the object. Similarly, hearing a sound from afar indicates that the ear does not contact the object. If there is contact with the object, then like the nose, one can only perceive the object that is contacted, and not the distant object. How is it understood that a sound is heard from afar? This is determined by the differences in direction and so on. For example, the sound of the south, the sound of the north, the sound of the distant, the sound of the near, are determined in this way. This is not possible for contact, like a bell and so on. If it is said that contact with the object is the only way, then this statement becomes cumbersome. The "here" mentioned here refers to people. If it is said that because it does not contact the object, the eye is different from the nose and so on, then for meditators, the divine eye...
