Yes, that is how it is measured. What is this dharma called "burning"? It is the arising of different fruits from the continuum of causes, with fire and other conditions as the cause. The sense faculties are not, because they are clear like light. The sense faculties are not to be burned, nor are they measured, because of their clarity. Sound is also not, because it is discontinuous. Because it is not constant, it is not constantly present with forms and so on. Therefore, these six groups are not present here. There are different views on burning and measuring. Burning and measuring are indeed burning and measuring; regarding those burning and measuring. If asked why? Because there are different views. It is reasonable to have different views, because both sides are seen as reasonable. If asked how? It is said: Some say that the four elements themselves are what burn, because they are the cause of complete transformation. Some say that only the fire element burns, because it possesses other functions, and because the fire element gains its function by overpowering other elements, and because earth and so on, which are not fire, do not burn. Others say that only the external four elements with a greater proportion of the fire element burn. If only the fire element were to burn, then the three elements that are combined with it, and the form that is based on them, would also be burned, and without fire, it would turn to ashes. Therefore, all four elements themselves are what burn, because they are the cause of transformation, and not only the fire element burns. Regarding measuring, because earth is the cause of the scale tipping low, only what is heavy is to be measured, because it is impossible for light things to cause the scale to tip low. Substances that have a function together with speech itself are said to be the cause of the scale tipping low, but not those that have a function together with lightness itself, even though heaviness still appears to have power there. The five internal ones born from maturation and arising from the king.

Then, the term 'five' is for the purpose of clarifying the realm of consciousness. What should be definitively understood by this? It should be definitively understood that the five internal ones arise only from maturation and increase. From what does this arise? It is stated that it does not arise from a cause that is in accordance with it. How so? It is stated that there is no cause in accordance with it apart from those, meaning that apart from the lineage arising from maturation and increase, there is no other result of a cause in accordance with it, produced by a cause of equal potential and all-pervading. It is not that it does not exist at all. The previously arisen eyes, etc., are the cause through a cause of equal potential for the subsequently arisen and unarisen eyes, etc., and the cause in accordance with it is also the result of a cause of equal potential. The cause in accordance with those is only that which arises from maturation and increase, and nothing else. Just as there is a difference between what arises from maturation and what arises from increase, or just as forms, etc., arising from a cause in accordance with it are perceived in a dead body, similarly, there is no perception of a cause in accordance with those arising from maturation and increase as being different from those. Therefore, since there is no cause in accordance with it apart from what arises from maturation and increase, it is explained that the eyes, etc., do not arise from a cause in accordance with it. If maturation is not related to another maturation, how can it be said that those arise from maturation? What arises from maturation is not maturation itself. What then? What arises from the cause of maturation arises from maturation. For that very reason, it is stated that it is like an ox cart because the intervening words are not manifest. Alternatively, in the statement 'action that has reached the time of fruition,' the time when the birth of the result from action is uninterrupted is the time of fruition. At that time, that action becomes maturation, hence it is called maturation. This will be shown as follows: because it arises from action capable of producing a result without interruption, it arises from maturation. If one turns towards the result...
