If suffering arises when pressed or cut, and happiness arises when reversed, that is what is called "grasped." Regarding the statement "what is touched is of two kinds," how should this be determined? Is it that what is touched itself is of two kinds, or that the kinds of what is touched are two? Both can be determined. Regarding the statement "elements and what is made from elements," why is it said "what is made from elements"? Because it exists within the elements, that is why it is said. That is to say, for the sake of birth, for the sake of reliance, for the sake of dwelling, for the sake of discrimination, and for the sake of increase. The remaining nine form substances are called "what is produced." From what are they remaining? They are remaining from what has already been explained as the touch realm. Because "remaining" is said, it would lead to the fault of non-form substances, therefore "form substance" is said. Because there are also non-manifesting forms in the dharma realm, therefore it is a form substance, and therefore "nine" is said. Because non-manifesting forms also come from what is made from elements, therefore to include it, "one part of the dharma realm" is said. The word "also" is for the meaning of inclusion. Others say that the word "also" is to show that it is not the case that only the nature of the element arises. The remaining ones, merely through being uncreated, establish that they are neither of the two. Some say that the twelve sense bases are merely elements. The word "merely" is to distinguish that it is made from elements. If that is the case, then the question and answer are not reasonable. The twelve sense bases are merely elements, that is not the case. Merely with words, one cannot be convinced, so the reason is given: because the elements are determined as four natures, and characteristics such as hardness. In the sutra it says: in order to determine as four natures, and in order to determine characteristics such as hardness. Among them, these great elements are four, because they are determined as four natures, it shows that there are no ten great elements. If there is no what is made from elements that is different from the elements, then it should be said that the twelve sense bases are four or one.
English
O's kyi. Ten is not like that. The definite grasping of characteristics such as hardness is to show that the eye and so on, and form and so on, are not included among the elements, because hardness and so on do not match their own nature and characteristics, just like feelings and so on. Furthermore, how do you understand that they do not match the characteristics of the elements? Because those elements are tangible and are the objects of touch. Because there is no difference in being the nature of the elements, all forms and so on will become the objects of all senses, and therefore, if many senses become meaningless, then that is also non-existent. The eye and so on are also like that. The eye, ear, nose, and tongue do not grasp hardness and so on, that is, the qualities of hardness, wetness, warmth, lightness, and movement. Therefore, earth and so on are not the nature of form and so on. The body's sense also does not grasp colors and so on, that is, colors, sounds, smells, and tastes. Therefore, it is established that form and so on are not the nature of the elements. The eye and so on are because they have objects, and because the objects are definite, so it should be understood that they are different in nature from the objects, and that their natures are different from each other. Therefore, it is established that the ten sense bases are not merely elements. This is temporarily reasoning. Now, quoting the scriptures, the sutra extensively says, "Monks," etc., saying, "Because it can be transformed into form, it is form," meaning "can be harmed." Because it exists here, the sense bases of the eye and so on are called having form. The sutra says that only the touch sense base is the four great elements, not the sense bases of the eye and so on, because "being made the cause" is the reason for the elements. Because only one side of the touch sense base includes the elements, the remaining eye and so on, and softness and so on, are not elements, this is clearly and universally shown. If everything is the nature of the elements, then only the two aspects of the touch sense base will be shown, not the sense bases of the eye and so on.
