It is not by those (referring to the aggregates). For example, it widely appears that the four objects of gathering "gather retinues." The four objects of gathering are giving, kind speech, beneficial conduct, and acting in accordance. Retinue refers to monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. It is not that the objects of gathering are the self-nature of the retinues. That one gathers another is because they are not the same. Because it is "sometimes existing," and so on. "Sometimes existing" means sometimes arising, and its thing is "sometimes existing" itself, because it is "sometimes existing" itself. Imputation means the meaning of designation. Because it has no before and after, it is "sometimes existing." The objects of gathering merely make the retinues their own. If so, then why is it said that "the three aggregates gather the path"? There, the word "gathering" merely refers to being in accordance. Because it gathers by its own nature, it is to show that it is permanent and the ultimate truth. Asking from the perspective of dividing the elements by the division of the basis is what widely appears as "eye, ear, nose, etc." To show that the elements are divided by the divisions of lineage, sphere of activity, and consciousness, and not by the division of the basis, it is said, "it does not change," and so on. Among them, the eye, etc., are different elements from each other because of the differences in lineage, sphere of activity, and consciousness. The elements of objects such as form are different because of the differences in lineage and consciousness. The six elements of consciousness are different because of the differences in lineage and sphere of activity. If it were not so, wouldn't it become twenty-one elements? One should not say that. Then what should one say? One should say this: it would not become meaningless elements. Similarly, it should be applied to the ear and nose as well. The same lineage is because each of the two is the nature of ear and nose. The same sphere of activity is because they are objects of sound and smell. The same consciousness is because each of the two is the basis of the consciousness of ear and nose. For that very reason, lineage and

and places, because they are similar to consciousness, the male and female faculties are not separated from the body's elements. If the eyes and so on are all one element, why are their supports not the same? Therefore, it is said, "For the sake of beauty, two arise." If things arise due to the power of cause, and not due to the power of need, then this is because it is now. Why is it said, "For the sake of beauty, two arise"? Just as now, among various sentient beings, those of the same kind have different supports for the eyes and so on, and appear beautiful in the support that distinguishes the limbs, so it is undoubtedly the same in the past. Therefore, if you consider the body accomplished by the karma driven by craving, it is said, "For the sake of beauty, two arise," which is to show the basis of the karma that produces it. For example, because ornaments are the result of karma caused by the desire for beauty, it is said to be for the purpose of beauty. Here it is said: Just as with bracelets and so on, saying for the sake of beauty, just as the desire for beauty is something to be done, the doubling of the eyes and so on is the same. It is not like that, if the eyes and so on did not become two supports, they would be very beautiful, because they appear beautiful in the words of the two supports and so on. The meaning of aggregates, elements, and sources will be explained in detail. If we consider it from the perspective of definitive words: The meaning of accumulation, the gate of birth, and kinds, are the aggregates, sources, and elements. It is said that because these have accumulation, the gate of birth, and kinds, the words are combined in this way. What are those? They are the aggregates, sources, and elements. It is said that sounds and so on are the remainder of the words. How is the meaning of aggregate understood as the meaning of accumulation? It is said in the sutra: Gathering them all together, they are counted as the aggregate of form. One object is one. Form that has passed is imperm
