The collection of the five consciousnesses, because they look outward, they do not abide equally. That is only in the mind consciousness. Because it has the cause of inappropriate attention, it is only in the mind consciousness, not in the collection of the five consciousnesses, because they themselves are without discrimination. Death is the cessation and interruption of the activity of the five senses, and it exists in accordance with the consciousness that follows, so that is also only in the mind consciousness. To explain by comparison, by mentioning birth, one should also understand that the intermediate state and the connecting continuum are also the content of what is said. Mind consciousness is associated with the three feelings, namely pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral, because it is not known in which feeling there is death and birth, therefore it is said of feeling: death, birth, neutral. Other feelings are obvious, namely having the characteristics of pleasant and unpleasant, because they arise when they are universally observed, so they are the source of benefit and harm. For the clear consciousness, death and birth are not possible, because those states are weak, so there are not these two. Therefore, in the three meditations, beings only have the mind of death and birth in the near-attainment concentration, because in the actual concentration there is no feeling that is neither happy nor painful. Because it is said without distinction, all consciousnesses will have death and birth, and it is also said of that consciousness: there is no one-pointed, unfocused mind. Those who are born in the desire realm and abide in a mind of equal abiding do not have death and birth. Why not? Because it is an unequal place. Those who are born in another place and abide in the mind of another place will not die or be born in another place. So, when one dies and is born in the form realm or the formless realm, will there be a mind of equal abiding in one's own place? Therefore, it arises from manifestation.

It is said that it is because it is beneficial, and it is because it is beneficial. The mind of equanimity in one's own ground will not change into death or birth. Because it depends on combination, it arises from manifest activity. Because it is endowed with great training, the mind arising from the manifest activity of benefiting is clear, so it is not annihilation or conformity. The mind of death is harmful, and equanimity is beneficial. Therefore, it is not permissible to transmigrate from that. Because the mind of birth is afflicted, and equanimity is virtuous, that ground is also not suitable for birth. That state is attachment, and equanimity is clear because it arises from manifest activity, so because it is not present in that state, how can there be birth from equanimity? There is also no mindlessness, it arises saying: death and birth, two. Combine it like that. Mindlessness is non-perception, and cessation samāpatti.

The scriptural authority of the Sautrantikas also makes it known that beings without mind do not have the process of death and transmigration. Regarding the statement, "because there is no cause for the cessation of mind," the causes for the cessation of mind are the samadhi of cessation, etc., but these do not occur at the time of birth. Regarding the statement, "because without afflictions there is no birth," because there is the saying, "the existence of birth is afflicted, all the afflictions of one's own place," and also, without mind, afflictions do not arise, therefore without mind there is no birth. Ananda, if consciousness does not enter the mother's womb... etc., from the scriptures that explain it extensively, it is also known that without mind there is no birth. The existence of death is explained in three ways, because there is the saying, "the other three." Arhats do not have afflicted minds, so what is it? It is virtuous and neutral. Regarding these, there are two: nirvana and neutral. Here, it is said that only the two neutral ones attain nirvana, but it is not only arhats. Only death without rebirth is called nirvana. Regarding the statement, "if there is equanimity as a result in the desire realm," some say that the word "if there is" also implies "there is also an intermediate state" below. Why? Because "in the difference of meditative results, there is no before or after in the three results, because of the desire realm." This is said having adopted the view of some people. Some others think that from that point onwards, "neither pleasure nor pain is experienced," therefore they believe that above the third dhyana, there is the experience of results that are neither pleasant nor painful. According to their view, if it is not so, then it is said only with respect to the practitioner. The statement "not for others" means not for virtue, because it is impossible to have afflictions. Because the virtuous mind is powerful, it does not accord with the cessation of mind, while the weak neutral mind accords with the cessation of mind. Here, the cessation of mind refers to the cessation of mind without rebirth. Some say that because virtue has results, and also the arhats have turned their backs on future results.
