I am going to say that if the happiness of the third dhyana is the place of consciousness, then, therefore, it is first said "in the desire realm," the first meaning is the beginning. The sound "say" is because there is no meaning in "la." Because there is no faculty of happiness of consciousness in the desire realm, it is not established, therefore, even if there is a faculty of happiness of mind in the upper realm, it is not established, what is the reason for this? The close wandering of consciousness will surely become endowed with antidotes, what is the reason for this? If so, because there is no antidote, equanimity will not become the characteristic of close wandering, the characteristic of close wandering of happiness of consciousness above is not endowed with antidotes, then what is it? It is the close wandering itself. Others say that the happiness of the third dhyana is stable, while close wandering is unstable. Therefore, it is called the close wandering of consciousness, because the happiness of consciousness is unstable. The place of happiness of consciousness refers to those that produce happiness of consciousness. This is said in consideration of the manifestation of the collection of the five consciousnesses, saying "only this" means that thinking that those are the ones that guide and those that produce, the phrase "only this" is said. For example, for unpleasant things, after the eyes see forms, etc., they follow and abide in unpleasant things, therefore it is said to be manifested by eye consciousness, because before, they saw distinctions, etc. It is also the place of consciousness, because that will arise afterwards. In addition, "seeing" will be spoken of extensively, if it is said that the eyes closely wander in forms like the place of happiness of consciousness, then this can be blamed. However, because it is said between "seeing and touching," this cannot be blamed. If one has not seen, how can one closely wander to between not touching? After seeing from other places, what is said is the close wandering of consciousness. Otherwise, "in the desire realm" will be spoken of extensively.

Therefore, the eyes, etc., belonging to the desire realm, do not apprehend forms, sounds, tactile objects, etc., belonging to the form realm. In the form realm, there are also cases where the desire realm is the object. Those born in the form realm do not smell, taste, or touch odors, flavors, or tactile objects belonging to the desire realm, because they have abandoned desire for food. They look at forms and listen to sounds, because these are not food. If one approaches without seeing, then why does the sutra say, "Having seen forms with the eye"? Therefore, it is said that this is to explain how it is most clear. Because it is most easily determined by the eyes, etc., which manifestly accomplish it. If someone sees the form of a woman and then approaches her voice, or hears the voice of a woman and then approaches her form, that is only an approach of the mind. The phrase "through the door of the separation of the senses and objects" refers to things like "having seen forms with the eye" and "having heard sounds with the ear." Otherwise, it would be absurd to say that having seen forms with the eye, one would approach sounds like those of a pleasant place. "Determined by the continuum" refers to the continuum of sentient beings. It is possible that something like a pleasant place could arise in just one night, like the precious queen of a wheel-turning monarch. "Not an object"—why? Because the same form is like a pleasant place for some, but not for others. How many are associated with the desire realm? Among these, what is the object of how many? Some have desire as their object, some have form as their object, and some have the formless as their object. Similarly, it should be said up to those associated with the formless realm. How many are associated with the form realm? Among these, what is the object of how many? How many are associated with the formless realm? Among these, what is the object of how many? For this detailed analysis, only a distinction of bodies is made.
