Whether a monk or a Brahmin, whoever it may be, if one truly observes with "I," then all such true observation is directed towards these five aggregates of clinging, as has been extensively stated. If the body were the self, then it should be called "what is clung to as the self." Therefore, it is stated, "Because there is no self," and so on. If there were a self, it should be called "what is clung to as the self," but that does not exist. Therefore, in order to understand that it does not exist, it is said that speaking of "self" is "what is clung to." "Children, those without learning, individuals who follow after designations" means, in order, that they lack the wisdom born of simultaneity, scripture, and realization. "Following after designations" means following after names and terms as they are. "What desire and attachment are there towards them?" refers to desire, views, moral discipline and asceticism, and the view of self. Among these, for those desires and so on that have not been attained, it is "desire," which is to seek; for those that have been attained, it is "attachment," which is to be attached. "Of existence" means having the fruit of rebirth. "This is existence here" is a synonym for "This is existence here." Others say, "This is a synonym or definition for existence here." "In the manner of consciousness entering" means that due to the force of karma, the continuum of consciousness is connected with the intermediate existence, and like a blazing fire, it goes to that and that place, as previously shown. "Like it is said in that sutra" refers to what is aging? Graying hair and baldness, the aging and decay of conditioned things, this is called aging. What is death? The dying and passing away of beings from that and that class of beings, the moment of death itself, this is called death. This death and the previous aging are called old age and death. The view of the Vaibhashikas is exactly what was said before.

That which is called "is" refers to the twelve limbs of the state of the five aggregates, which possess twelve. To see as 'not' in the meaning of the letter and to ask is to ask what the meaning of ignorance is. What is not knowledge? To also over-extend to the eyes and so forth means that the eyes and ears and so forth are also over-extended to be ignorance, because they are also not knowledge. That which is called "is nothing at all" means that when ignorance is without knowledge, it becomes that which is not substance. That is also not knowledge, because it is shown as the entity of condition. That which is called "its dissimilar side" refers to the contradiction of the word of negation. Thus it shows. That which is called "what is other than a friend is also not" shows that it is not merely a negation. That which is called "is also not without a friend" is because it becomes nothing at all. That which is called "is also not dharma and not meaning, not action, and so forth," the word "and so forth" includes the unsuitable, the non-name, the non-human, and so forth. That which is called "became dissimilar to dharma and so forth" means that it is that which has become the dissimilar side of dharma, meaning, reason, name, and person, and so forth, but it is not merely the absence of dharma and so forth, and it is also not other than dharma and so forth, likewise, ignorance is also a dharma that has become the dissimilar side, but it is not other than knowledge and it is not merely the absence. That which is called "because it is shown as the entity of condition" means that with ignorance as the condition, there are formations, and if it is shown that formations are the entity of condition, then non-existence cannot be spoken of, therefore it is not reasonable as the entity of condition, and also the eyes and so forth are not the entity of condition of formations, because it would also be over-extended that formations increase for an Arhat. That which is called "after the words of fetters and so forth" means that in all the fetters, it is said to be the fetters of ignorance, in the outflows, it is said to be the outflows of ignorance, in the bonds, it is said to be the bonds of delusion, in the latent predispositions, it is said to be the latent predispositions of ignorance, in the rivers, it is said to be the rivers of ignorance.
