If it is elaborated that the twelve links of dependent origination are only these, then five links are the cause, and seven are the result. Therefore, there are only twelve links because there are no other causes and results. If this is the case, since ignorance has no cause, it would lead to the conclusion that samsara has a beginning, and since old age and death have no result, it would also lead to the conclusion that it has an end. Therefore, merely the absence of an antidote would lead to the absence of desire. If it is said, "From ignorance arise the formations," then what does this mean? If one acknowledges that afflictions give rise to karma, and the cause and effect of old age and death, it would also lead to the teaching being incomplete due to the remaining links, and there would be no connection between cause and effect. If this is the view, then "from afflictions arise afflictions, and action itself" will be elaborated. If it is said, "From ignorance arise the formations," then what does this mean? It indicates that afflictions give rise to karma. If it is said, "From existence arises birth," then what does this mean? It means that from karma arises the basis. If it is said, "From the basis or afflictions," then whatever craving and grasping there is in this life is said to be ignorance in the past. Therefore, ignorance will arise from the basis or afflictions, and this is established. If it is said, "From the basis also arise afflictions," then that refers to craving. Like this, it is said that craving is conditioned by feeling, and old age and death are also related to feeling, because it is said that between feelings is old age and death. If that is the case, then it is "from afflictions arise afflictions, and action itself, from that arises the basis, from that arises the basis and afflictions, this is the order of the links of existence," as it was said. If it is not like that, if one does not accept it as it was said, such as "from afflictions arise afflictions," then by what means would it be said, "Thus, this great mass of suffering"? What power would this have? Therefore, there is no need to supplement other links, and it will not be without connection, and it is not an incomplete teaching. Others say, from other sutras, and so on. From what other sutra? From the sutra that has a cause and has conditions, that is, "Monks, ignorance also has a cause."

With conditions and with basis. What is the cause of ignorance, what is the condition, what is the basis? It is said to be improper attention. Thus it is said. Even so, since the condition of improper attention is not mentioned, either cyclic existence has a beginning, or other limbs must be supplemented, so it will become that fault. If it is said like that, therefore it is said that improper attention also arises from the cause of ignorance. Therefore, this is without fault. Why is it not explained here, and how will it not become another limb? Therefore, it is said that it is explained because it is also included in grasping. It is said that "that" refers to improper attention. "Here also" refers to the Dependent Arising Sutra. Because grasping is the nature of all afflictions, and improper attention is also a mental defilement, it is said to be included in grasping. In that case, ignorance is not without cause, nor is it necessary to supplement other limbs, nor will it become without limit, so it is said. The teacher says, how is improper attention included in grasping? Thinking like this, even though it is not the nature of affliction. Grasping is only afflictions, not other dharmas, as it is said, ignorance and so on, are grasping, and the two views. Because it is said separately. If it is said that it comes from similar correspondence, then, it is not because it is the nature of affliction. Then what is it? Because of the similar correspondence with grasping, it is included in it. In order to clarify other thoughts, it is also in desire and ignorance, this is in the limb speech of dependent arising. It will become including that, refers to improper attention. Why? Because that, like grasping, also corresponds similarly with both desire and ignorance, because it is said to be the three afflictions. That
