, and how is the meaning of "self-nature" understood here? That is, go and investigate. Thus, these are the aspects of conditioned dharmas, because the objects of speech are the same. Of conditioned things, only those that are tainted and involve grasping, the aggregates are also those. If, apart from the path, all conditioned things, isn't the explanation of tainted, that is, being with afflictions, already done? This is true, but it is to show that these are merely other names for those. This treatise, after explaining that all conditioned things are called aggregates, also states that whatever is with afflictions is also called grasping aggregates, and only the untainted aggregates, this is to determine the meaning of the name. What will this accomplish? Whatever are grasping aggregates are also aggregates, because there is no difference in the meaning of accumulation for things like form. There are only aggregates, but there are also those that are not grasping aggregates, that is, the untainted formations. These are not produced from grasping aggregates, nor do they depend on grasping aggregates, and grasping aggregates do not arise from these. Afflictions such as desire are only given the name grasping aggregates, because these produce and grasp in the three realms of existence. Also, because the karma that throws into existence is grasping. Because they arise from these, they are grasping aggregates. Like the fire of grass and straw, for example, the fire that arises from grass is the fire of grass, and the fire that arises from straw is the fire of straw, similarly, the aggregates that arise from grasping are grasping aggregates, because they are the cause of the karma of birth and afflictions. If, for the time being, because of their similar cause and ripening result, some that are afflicted and some that are neutral can be understood to arise from grasping aggregates, however, tainted virtuous dharmas and some neutral dharmas arise from grasping

How is the intermediate state described? Virtuous and non-virtuous actions, as well as the imperturbable formations, are all conditioned by ignorance. Those with outflows but not of a disturbing nature are the results of maturation, the actions of a person, and the fruits of autonomy. Alternatively, the aggregates of clinging are the clingings themselves. How are they aggregates of clinging? Because they depend on clinging, like the king's men. Just as a man who depends on the king is the king's man, so too the aggregates that depend on clinging are aggregates of clinging, because by the power of clinging, they tend towards objects of focus and other realms of activity, that is, because they enter into them. The aggregates of the Arhats are also dependent on clinging, because the aggregate of form changes due to the power of harm contaminated by disturbing emotions, and because the mind and mental factors that accord with these arise. Alternatively, clinging arises from these, so they are aggregates of clinging, like a tree with flowers and fruits. Just as a tree from which flowers or fruits arise is a tree of flowers and fruits, so too clinging arises from the aggregates. Even from the contaminated phenomena in the continuum of an Arhat, clinging of another continuum arises, because it expands and grows through the object of focus. These themselves are also finite, and so on. Strife is disturbing emotions, and strife is like the strife of ordinary conceptualizations. Therefore, to show the reason for conceptualization, it is said that it harms oneself and others. In the world, where there is no harm to oneself and others, strife is called war. When disturbing emotions arise, they also harm oneself and others, because attachment to their desire increases, so they abide in harming oneself. Harming others and harming both are also recorded in the sutras. Therefore, the word "strife," in relation to the aggregates, is contention, realization, and all disturbing emotions.

This must be grasped. Regarding "for the sake of increasing them" and so on. Those struggles increase them, that is, they increase them, and it is the very thing that they increase. Therefore, it is precisely for the sake of their increase, that is, through the same way as the object. Just as defilements increase and become accompanied by defilements, so those struggles that increase them are accompanied by struggles. Those defiled dharmas are also referred to by other names in the scriptures, such as the origin of suffering, which appears extensively. Regarding "because it is inconsistent with the noble ones." Suffering is the characteristic of inconsistency. The five aggregates of clinging themselves are the suffering of conditioning, inconsistent with the noble ones, and become unsatisfactory. Therefore, it is called suffering. The mention of the noble ones is because the aggregates of pleasure and neither pleasure nor pain are not inconsistent with the non-noble ones. Because the suffering of conditioning itself makes all defiled things a place of aversion, it becomes inconsistent with the noble ones. Here, "because of the origin of suffering" means that suffering arises from this, because it is the cause of similar things. If it is said that the path will also become an origin, that is not possible. Because the arising of suffering is called the origin of this, only the cause of suffering is the origin, not the cause of the path. Just as no one, out of weariness of the path, fully understands its cause. "Rujana" refers to the root of destruction, because this destroys, therefore it is the world. Destruction is also of two kinds: destruction by impermanence and destruction by antidote. The Blessed One also spoke with the two words "destroying and completely destroying." In this way, the path will not become a fallacy. It is destroyed by being destroyed and impermanent itself, not by being destroyed by an antidote, because there is no fault.
