Therefore, if the statement is not like that, it will contradict the statement in the Vibhajyavāda that "the bases of speech are encompassed by the eighteen elements." How is it otherwise? If the base with meaning is not mentioned, how does it contradict that? If the name with the meaning of peace is not mentioned, then the name is encompassed by a part of the Dharma element. How can the bases of speech be encompassed by the eighteen elements? How can non-associated formations have meaning in name? Because speech is attached to name, and name expresses meaning. Others say that this can be expressed as speech, and it does not contradict the scriptures of language. If the basis of speech is mentioned with meaning, then why is the unconditioned not accepted? Because it also has a name as the basis of speech. It is not like that, because of sutra and reasoning. First, the sutra says, "Monks, these three are the basis of speech, the fourth and fifth are not." Which three? The past is the basis of speech, the future is the basis of speech, and the present is the basis of speech, up to here. Reasoning also says that the meaning of name combined with meaning, from the perspective of reasoning, the basis of speech is the name with meaning. Therefore, if any name can be expressed in conjunction with meaning, that is the basis of speech. Name belongs to time, and does not belong to the unconditioned, so it cannot be said to be combined. Therefore, the unconditioned is not the basis of speech. Others say that where there are speech, eyes, and meaning, that is the basis of speech. The unconditioned is only meaning, without speech and name, so it is not the basis of speech. The inevitable occurrence that is not devoured by demons is the definitive occurrence. Occurrence is occurrence, meaning going. The occurrence without doubt is the definitive occurrence. That is also the realm of Nirvana without residue, because there is no return after going there. For that very reason, it is said that the Nirvana of all conditioned things, just as the path should be abandoned like a boat. Therefore, it says of all conditioned things...

The matter has been spoken of. Nirvana with remainder is not the Nirvana of all conditioned phenomena, therefore it is not desired here. There is no contradiction with the four alternatives here, because the four alternatives are stated for attainment, and there is no attainment without remainder. Because those exist in these, they are accompanied by definite arising, just like being accompanied by wealth. Because they are accompanied by cause, they are accompanied by a basis. Regarding this, since things exist in this, it is a basis. Because it arises from that, it exists as if in a dwelling, thinking that it is not only existing in that way like the Samkhyas. Those in which the cause exists are those accompanied by cause. Because the word "basis" is seen in many meanings in the scriptures, it is specifically said "because it is accompanied by cause." Is this the word for cause? Regarding the phrase "it is," it should be known that the word "it" here is the word for basis, the word for nature, and not the word for cause. In other respects, is it not the same? In the scriptures, the word "basis" is seen in five meanings: nature, object, having, cause, and complete holding. Among them, for nature, as it is said: The Venerable Ananda said, "Lord, how should I advise these newly ordained monks? How should I instruct them accordingly? How should I teach them the Dharma?" The Lord said, "Ananda, you should have these newly ordained monks hold the basis, have them recite the basis." This is like saying that this should be understood as nature. What are the knowable dharmas? The answer is: Because all dharmas are known by knowing things as they are, they are knowable. This should be understood as the object as it is. The basis that is accompanied by the pervasive attachment to following after is also accompanied by the pervasive anger, this should be understood as having. What are the dharmas accompanied by a basis? The answer is: all conditioned dharmas. This should be understood as being accompanied by cause. The basis of a shop, the basis of a house, the basis of goods, this should be understood as complete holding. Therefore, the word basis has many meanings.
