Rinmala. Householder Saga. Is it similar to the sublime cessation? Or is it different? When asked, the venerable one replied that it is not like that. Similar means having or being equal to conditions, meaning the same and similar. If it is multiple, then it is not contradictory to have a second or to be the same itself, so it should not be denied that it is not the same. Such words as "There is no such cause" appear extensively. Here, because the word for cause does not appear explicitly, it is said that it is not the same for the similar cause itself. For example, just as fear is called fear. Therefore, from here, the similar cause is prevented. Similarity itself is not prevented. It is said in this way that because this is unconditioned, it is neither a cause nor a result. Therefore, it is said that it is not the same. There are also others who, from the perspective of all cessation, say that cessation is not the same. Cessation and the same, other dharmas and other virtues do not exist. Saying "For birth it is permanent," these past and present occurrences are not obstacles to birth, so it is only for future ones that it can be obtained. Cessation should be considered in five aspects: impermanence, equipoise, birth, discrimination, and the difference of non-discriminating cessation. Among them, mentioning birth is to distinguish the cessation of impermanence itself, because that is an obstacle to the abiding of those that are happening now, but not to birth. Mentioning permanently becoming an obstacle is to remove the samadhi of birth and equipoise, because those two are the cause of temporary obstacles to future mind and mental factors. Mentioning others is to distinguish from the cessation of discrimination with the characteristic of separation just mentioned. Discrimination is the wisdom proven by reason and analysis, which is not obtained through it. So what is it? It is obtained from being free from conditions without it, therefore it is said. Whatever is the same as the cause is the immediate cause, the object condition, and the dominant condition, these four conditions.

From where do we have four, or three, or even two? All obstacles can be found. Whatever is produced by however many causes, when arising, becomes a permanent obstacle because those causes are incomplete. This is called non-analytical cessation, and one can obtain a real entity. For example, when the eye and mind are focused on one body, others besides the eye and mind, such as sound, smell, taste, and touch, are not focused on because one is not focused on all of them. "Having become past" means having become destroyed. Now, I have the cause, object, and dominant condition, but because the immediately preceding condition is incomplete, the five aggregates of consciousness that arise from them do not arise, and they cannot arise again because non-analytical cessation is obtained. If asked, how do we know that they will not arise again? Therefore, it is said, "Because they do not have the power to focus on past objects," which indicates that eye consciousness and the like have present objects, so they do not arise on past objects such as form because the object condition is incomplete. Some aspects of mind and the sense base should also be discussed because eye consciousness and the like are intended to be used as examples. Here, four possibilities arise. Why? To distinguish clearly. Otherwise, if those non-analytical cessations were only analytical cessations, or if those analytical cessations became non-analytical cessations, that would be impossible. For example, here, only contaminated dharmas can be obtained through analytical cessation, while conditioned non-arising dharmas are obtained through non-analytical cessation. Contaminated past, present, and future dharmas are only cessations by observation, not non-analytical cessations, because that is only for non-arising dharmas. Saying "contaminated" is to distinguish uncontaminated dharmas, because there is no fault, so contaminated dharmas are not ceased through analytical cessation. Uncontaminated conditioned non-arising

Those with the nature of arising obtain only non-selective cessation, because they are without outflows, there is no selective cessation, but due to the lack of conditions, non-selective cessation is obtained. Saying 'non-arising nature' is to distinguish past, present arising, and future arising phenomena. Saying 'without outflows' is to eliminate those with outflows. Saying 'conditioned' is to eliminate the unconditioned, which is also of a non-arising nature and without outflows. For example, when the path of faith-following manifests, the path of dharma-following, due to the lack of conditions, obtains non-selective cessation, and like when the forbearance of knowing dharma in suffering arises, the four future aspects of the forbearance of knowing dharma in suffering also obtain non-selective cessation. Similarly, it should be stated for each truth, and similarly, it should be applied to other instances. Both are phenomena of non-arising with outflows, because they are with outflows, they are selective cessation, and because they are non-arising phenomena, they are non-selective cessation. Neither are phenomena of past, present arising, and future arising without outflows, because they are without outflows, they do not obtain selective cessation, and because they are phenomena of arising and future arising, they do not obtain non-selective cessation. The non-arising of future arising phenomena is because it is not permanent, because non-selective cessation is a permanent obstacle to arising. Just as those with outflows do not know, so too are conditioned phenomena. Asking what are those conditioned phenomena? In order to gather the truth of the path of complete abandonment, the conditioned phenomena are asked again. Therefore, it is said, 'Those conditioned dharmas, etc.' 'Those' refers to holding onto what was previously said. Regarding 'also,' the distinction between those with and without outflows has already been explained. Saying 'conditioned' is to eliminate the unconditioned.
