It is like that (affliction) karma is completely ceased. If it is said that because that (cessation) has not left a seed, then how can future suffering or afflictions be eliminated? Therefore, it is elaborated that "future suffering or afflictions are," because the seed cannot arise, and because there is no seed, it will never arise. And the absence of a seed is only due to the power of individual examination. In this way, it can be established that afflictions are eliminated from the suffering of the three times. What has ceased is the past, and what is tending towards cessation and is happening now, the effort, that is, the effort to generate an antidote, will not become meaningful, will not become necessary, this is a concluding word. It is said in the sutra that the most excellent of those is freedom from attachment. Freedom from attachment is the cessation of desire, which means cessation caused by individual examination. Because it is permanent, it is superior because of the purity of conditioned phenomena; because it is virtuous, it is superior because of the purity of unconditioned phenomena. If it is said that Nirvana is both the supreme of conditioned and unconditioned dharmas and is also non-existent, this contradicts the sutra. Like this, non-existence is not dharma-nature because it has no characteristic; the inexpressible is not supreme because the inexpressible is pure, because there is no difference. Therefore, whatever is called dharma by holding its own characteristic, and whatever is particularly superior because of the purity of other dharmas, that is just something that has been transformed into another meaning. Precisely because of this, it is said, how can it be said that there is no excellence among non-existents? How can it be said that among non-existents, such as space, etc., there is no excellence, and that freedom from attachment is unconditioned and merely non-existent? It cannot be said like that, therefore there is no contradiction with the sutra. If it exists, but is not substantially existent, then what should be said about what it is like? It is like what we have said. Merely being intangible is space, subtle increase and birth, the cessation of what has arisen, because of the power of individual examination, no other arises, this is cessation caused by individual examination. Merely that individual examination does not exist, because the conditions are not complete, it does not arise, this is not cessation caused by individual examination, like this.

Son. If it is said that there is existence in a nature that does not exist, what would happen? For example, sound has a prior non-existence and a later non-existence. However, even if the word "thing does not exist" is added, it cannot prove that it exists, because the word "exists" is just an additional component of the word. For the unconditioned, it should be viewed in the same way, it can be said that it "exists" and it can also be said that it "is not existence." The answer to those who say, "How can something that does not exist be superior?" is: Some things that do not exist will appear in detail. What is that like? It refers to the "happiness of being completely free from all harm," just like being without illness. Why is this worthy of praise? In order to make the beings to be tamed aspire to it. Those beings to be tamed who are attached to themselves will be afraid of it. Space is not without all harm, because it only has the nature of being without touch. Non-discriminating cessation, although it is complete separation, is not free from all harm, because only those who do not have birth can obtain it. Therefore, because it is different from others, it is superior and worthy of praise. Even if it does not have its own nature, why not accept the name of Dharma like the past and the future? If it is said that this needs to be proven, it is because in the fifth chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, this needs to be proven, because it has already been explained. How is it explained? It is said that in order to make the tamed aspire to it, even though it is unspeakable, they will be different from each other, just like the prior non-existence and so on. If it is said that cessation will not become the noble truth, then, for something that is nothing, how can it be said to be its truth or falsehood? For the time being, what is the meaning of the truth of cessation? Is it the meaning of substance? Or is it the meaning of non-inversion? If it is the meaning of substance, then the conventional truth will become non-existent, so the meaning of non-inversion must be admitted. In this way, like suffering, the cessation of suffering will not contradict the truth. In order to show this, it is said that the noble ones will in detail...
