The path of meditation and the path of no more learning are distinguished by the path of seeing of the higher grounds, through the means of making them thoroughly mature. Similarly, the path of meditation of the higher grounds distinguishes the path of no more learning of the lower grounds. In this regard, thoroughly maturing refers to the path of seeing and so forth, as explained extensively. Mentioning "and so forth" is to summarize the path of meditation and the path of no more learning, that is, the forbearance of knowing the Dharma in suffering of the higher grounds is distinguished from the knowing the Dharma in suffering of the lower grounds through the means of thorough maturation, and so forth, should be applied similarly. Similarly, the smallest of the small is distinguished from the medium of the small through the means of thorough maturation, and similarly, the medium of the small is distinguished from the large of the small through the means of thorough maturation, up to the medium of the large being distinguished from the large of the large, because the large of the large has no other distinction. If it is said that the path of following faith is the common cause of the six, then, in order to clarify the previous view that the path of following faith and the path of following Dharma cannot arise in the same continuum, it is said "in the same continuum" and so forth. The arising of the path of following faith is the factual matter of the cause of the nature of the path of following Dharma not arising, but its not arising is because of the lack of conditions, because whatever is the cause of something, it is never not a cause. Regarding "arising from cultivation," mentioning arising from cultivation is to negate being born with it. Arising from cultivation is arising from cultivation. Arising from hearing refers to those that arise from hearing the words of the Buddha, and not from hearing the words of non-Buddhists. Arising from thinking refers to those that arise solely from thinking. Arising from meditation refers to arising from meditating on impermanence and so forth. The equal and the distinguished are the only causes, and not the causes of the inferior, because the inferior fruit of the cause is unreasonable, and effort would become fruitless.
