Therefore, are not the letters also the names of the parts of the alphabet? Therefore, should it not be said that letters are different from names? Answer: In order to understand the parts of the alphabet, the word "is" is explained in detail. For example, in order to understand combinations such as Devadatta, the name Devadatta is given. Similarly, in order to understand letters, the parts of the alphabet are made. The words such as letters are used to understand the parts that do not have letters, because that is the symbol marked as the essence of understanding things. For example, a letter that is not heard can be understood by writing, because it is understood through symbols. Therefore, letters are not the names of those parts of the alphabet. Therefore, letters are different from names. What is the meaning of "many"? It should be known that it means "collection." Among them, the word "collection of names" has a detailed explanation. Previously, for example, words such as "form and sound," like those examples mentioned, were to show the self-nature of the name. And here, for example, words such as "form, sound, smell, taste, and touch," like those examples mentioned, are for the meaning of showing the collection of names. Similarly, before it was said to show the self-nature of words, but here it is also said to show the collection of words. Similarly, it should be said for letters as well. They are also the self-nature of language, which is explained in detail. The prerequisite for wanting to express is the throat, palate, lips, teeth, and tongue, and the sounds emitted from these become the essence of letters such as A, which is called language. Chapters of names, etc., which are different from language, are not grasped through their own essence or results. Therefore, they are only the self-nature of language, and because they are the self-nature of language, they are the essence of sound, so they will become the self-nature of form, because sound is contained by the aggregate of form. Therefore, why should it be said "those who have consciousness"? Because they can be perceived by the sense of hearing, but they still think so. They are the self-nature of language.

The term "not being" refers to the non-nature of sound. Regarding this, the reason stated is that if it is the sound of speech, it arises extensively. The sound of "merely" is to distinguish name, sentence, and letter. Sound clarifies name and sentence from eight aspects, therefore it is the cause of understanding meaning, but it is not directly understood without relying on name and sentence. Therefore, those that understand meaning, such as name and sentence, are different from language. Therefore, language does not directly express meaning, but clarifies or generates name, thus it relies on name, and name expresses meaning because it makes meaning understood. This shows that name directly points to things, but sentence does not. Merely sound is not language, then what is it? It is the characteristic of sound. Then, what is that like? Therefore, it is said that the nature of letters ka, etc., are those sounds through which meaning can be understood. The question raised by excluding the collection of names, etc., is, through what sound can meaning be understood, and so on. The so-called "whatever speakers define things" means that letters a, etc., express this meaning in such an order, and whatever defines things in this way can understand meaning, but not all can understand. This shows that sound relies on symbols to understand meaning, not all sounds can understand, nor can it be understood by merely existing. It is said thus: "The sound that has not become an object, does not show its meaning, if those are not held, the mind also does not clarify the meaning." For example, in words such as "go (gཽ)", the letter "ག (ga)", the letter "ཨཽ (au)", and the sound with a strong tone mark, in this order, define nine meanings, thereby understanding them. The so-called "some think that name expresses meaning" appears extensively, then, how can meaning be understood? By elaborating "the name of this meaning is this," but that is not the case, if it is understood through a non-understanding of meaning, then that is mastering the symbols.
