Isn't it said in the sutra of characteristics regarding what is called "birth" and so on? How is it that similar characteristics are not collected here? Because everything has the word "also." Conditioned things also appear to arise, and the word "also" indicates the arising of arising. The other two are similar. If it were not so, there would be no need to say the word "also" on all three. Doesn't each one become four characteristics? The collection of four characteristics is four characteristics. Regarding the statement, "Because those also become the fault of arising and so on," it is like the root dharma because it is conditioned. Or, shouldn't the arising of arising and so on be admitted for the root arising and so on? It will not, because it is included in the eight dharmas and one dharma, which is explained in detail. The word "inclusion" means abiding and acting, so the question is: What does this word inclusion mean? Thinking that it is explaining the latter, it is said: It is acting, that is, the effort of a person. In this regard, the inclusion of birth in the eight dharmas is like the fingertip and the edge of a sword touching and cutting. Because acting on oneself is contradictory, the other eight dharmas, except for oneself, refer to moving to the future time. The inclusion of abiding is when birth leads to the present, it makes the remainder abide except for itself. If there is no characteristic of birth, then those will not abide. The inclusion of aging is when abiding, it destroys the ability except for itself. If it were not so, then those that have not destroyed the ability to do things would not become cessation. The inclusion of impermanence is when the ability diminishes, it moves to the past time except for itself. The arising of arising and so on is for one dharma. The arising of arising only includes arising, not for others. The impermanence of impermanence also only includes impermanence. Because the abilities of arising and so on and the arising of arising and so on are different, they are included in the eight dharmas and one dharma. The objects of mind consciousness and eye consciousness have many and few.

Just as it is. Or, it is like some hens lead many chicks, and some hens lead few chicks. Because it is well-known in the world and in the scriptures, this example is cited nearby. Because the characteristics of conditioned phenomena are not substantial, the saying that they move like the sky arises, and I think it is like distinction. Just as the sky cannot be distinguished, these phenomena such as birth, which are not substantial, are also impossible to distinguish. As for the phrase "like distinction," how does distinction occur? Birth produces eight other phenomena besides itself, and the birth of birth produces only itself. Similarly, it should be said for others as well. If those things that are distinguished in other ways are substantial, is that so? It is said: No. Then what power does this word have? It has this power: if one distinguishes between the actions of others and the substantial things that act, then merely by distinguishing between actions and agents, those things do not become substantial. Then what is it? It is direct perception, inference, or trustworthy scripture. Therefore, it will be explained that there is no valid cognition. Because one cannot simply believe in words, the reason is asked, which is "Why?" In the detailed explanation of "because there is no valid cognition," the example of form and so on is an example of dissimilar phenomena. Among them, for the time being, form itself is direct perception. Having an eye itself is the negation of eye consciousness by inference. The so-called "form and desire" is scripture. Similarly, it should be applied to sound and so on as well. Birth and so on cannot be grasped by names and so on, and there is no inference with power in their existence itself, because there is no sign. There is also no scripture for substantial existence itself. If those things that become nominally existent from something, do they have valid cognition for nominal existence itself? The answer is yes, which phenomena have valid cognition for substantial existence itself?
