Regarding the cessation that transcends characteristics and possesses the nature of the cessation of perception, it is not seen as peaceful. Therefore, this does not approve of the cessation of mind and mental factors. Because it does not approve, ordinary beings cannot enter into meditative equipoise. The teacher Samantabhadra says that because the bonds of that ground have not been abandoned, it cannot be generated. If one cannot transcend what is to be abandoned by seeing, one cannot generate the meditative equipoise of cessation at the peak of existence. Moreover, ordinary beings do not transcend it. This is attained only through effort, which shows that it is not attained through detachment, but rather possesses a co-emergent attainment. 'The past is also unattainable.' If it is completely lost and then generated again, just like the Pratimoksha vows, it is attained only through effort, something that did not exist before, not something that was previously lost. 'The future is also unattainable.' Even if it is attained through effort, the future will not become attainable. Why? Therefore, it is said, 'That is because it is attained through the power of the mind.' Whatever slight future of that kind is attained is through the power of the mind, like the forbearance of knowing the Dharma in relation to suffering, and so forth. It is also said that the meditative equipoise of cessation is attained only through effort. From another perspective: O you who have reached the ultimate of virtue, there is nothing whatsoever born from effort. Wherever you wish to be, it depends solely on your wish. Because these things are said, the question is: Is the Bhagavan also produced from effort? 'To be attained by enlightenment,' although that wisdom of cessation and non-arising is also enlightenment, here it refers to the wisdom of cessation. Therefore, it is explained in detail, 'Simultaneous with the wisdom of cessation.' In this way, from 'their qualities' and so forth, up to 'therefore their' is explained in detail. The word 'merely' is for the purpose of distinguishing effort. 'Liberated from the parts of both,' the parts of both refer to the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of meditative equipoise. Regarding that,
