Since that is absent, it becomes the ideation of abiding in peace. Then, even more subtle than the subtle, after the ideation of the peak of existence, one enters into that samadhi. Thus, this is the ideation that is preceded by the ideation of abiding in peace. Abiding is abiding, a synonym for staying. Or, since it causes to abide, it is abiding. That is for the samadhi of non-ideation. As for saying that it is preceded by the ideation of renunciation, renunciation is non-renunciation, which is nirvana. The ideation that thinks of that as the fruit of renunciation is the ideation of renunciation. Or, since it causes to be liberated from samsara, it is liberation, which is the path. To conceive of that samadhi as the path is the ideation of renunciation, and whatever ideation precedes that is what is preceded by the ideation of renunciation. The karma that propels birth into the realm of neither perception nor non-perception is called the peak of existence because it is the most excellent of all, or because, like a tree, it is the ultimate of existence. Why is it that one does not enter into cessation samadhi in the realms below the peak of existence? Because turning away and ultimate cutting off become liberation there. That liberation is established based on two causes: turning away and the ultimate cutting off of the mind. If one exists in the lower realms, then all that has an object will enter, and it will not become turning away, nor will it become ultimate cutting off; wherever there is mind in that realm, the mind will be interrupted. This, in terms of the distinctions of virtue and so on, is only virtue, and the state of affliction or indeterminacy is not regarded as peaceful by the noble ones who are distracted and so on. As for saying "having been born, one will experience," how is that? That is, if a noble one generates cessation samadhi in the desire realm, then the completion of that birth in the peak of existence is what will be experienced after birth.

Then, how does one experience it in other instances? When one generates this cessation attainment, and having completely fallen away from detachment from formlessness, is born into pure meditative states, and further attains the peak of existence. There, when that birth arises, although one has attained and completely fallen away from this cessation attainment, it is what perfects maturation. Because of maturation, it is also uncertain. Regarding the statement, "It is also uncertain because of maturation," if one directly realizes it with the body, or is liberated from both aspects, and completely enters nirvana in this very place, then it will only become non-maturation. At maturation, it is the four aggregates of the peak of existence, because there is no form aggregate. If it is said that the non-perception attainment is only for ordinary beings, then this is solely for the noble ones. Why? Therefore, it is extensively stated, "Ordinary beings..." Ordinary beings who have attained the peak of existence manifestly presume self in the continuum of mind, and because that mind ceases there, they do not enter into meditative equipoise for fear of the self being cut off. If it is said that this same fault would also apply to the non-perception attainment, that is not so. For they do not have minds and mental factors that perceive form as self. Therefore, because there is form, they do not have the fear of thinking that it will become selfless for them. If, in the peak of existence, the mind and mental factors were also completely cut off, then because there is no form, we would fear thinking that the self is completely cut off in all respects. Because it is generated by the power of the noble path, it should be connected to "Ordinary beings do not generate the cessation attainment." How is it generated by the power of the noble path? It is because of seeing nirvana, therefore having faith in it. Seeing nirvana is having faith in that cessation attainment through the nature of the cessation of mind and mental factors, but not if nirvana is not seen. Ordinary beings, with wisdom...
