Those, whose continuums do not possess the attainments of afflictions, and are completely severed, those are those who have abandoned afflictions. Those whose continuums are not separated and whose continuums are not severed, those are those who have not abandoned afflictions. This is established by the distinction of the basis, and is called "these are those who have abandoned afflictions, these are those who have not abandoned afflictions." Here, the basis is the five aggregates. Others say that it is the nature of mind and mental factors. In order to show the distinction of the basis of the noble ones, ordinary beings, those who have abandoned afflictions, and those who have not abandoned afflictions, it is extensively stated, "The abode of the noble ones is," etc. The basis that arises on the noble path is the seed of afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, and the basis that is related to them becomes the cause of others, so at that time it is called an ordinary being, because it can generate other moments related to the seeds of all the afflictions of the three realms. The antidote to afflictions is the path of seeing or the path of meditation becoming manifest, and if it becomes manifest, then those bases are not the cause of other moments related to the seeds of afflictions to be abandoned, because they have obtained the conditions that contradict their arising. Therefore, that basis also cannot generate the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, because there is no seed. Those without seeds should not arise, because it would be too extreme. Therefore, from the continuous cessation of the seeds of afflictions, by the power of the path of seeing and meditation, how can those afflictions that should be destroyed by them not arise again, it is said, "Because the seeds of afflictions have been uprooted from that basis." Therefore, it is said, "The basis is like a seed burned by fire," etc., like a seed burned by fire, there is no seed for sprouting, so that basis also does not sprout, because it has not become a seed, just as the basis is burned by the fire of the path, and when it has not become the seed of afflictions, it is called the abandonment of afflictions. Thus, if that is the case, then worldly desire

If it is said that I will not abandon afflictions without being separated from desire, because the worldly path does not cut off the seeds of afflictions. Then, its basis is that if, relying on the worldly path, the substance of the seeds of all afflictions is diminished, it is called abandoning afflictions. Conversely, it is not called abandonment, that is, if the paths of the noble and the non-noble rely on what has not been burned and the substance of the seeds has not been diminished, it is not called abandoning afflictions. Relying on what has not been uprooted from the root, and having undiminished seeds, it corresponds to what has not been abandoned. Relying on what has been uprooted from the root, or diminishing the seeds, it does not correspond to the abandoned afflictions. If this is the case, even if there is no difference in corresponding to the worldly mind, one is established as a noble and a common person because of relying on what has been uprooted from the root and what has not been uprooted from the root. Because of diminishing the seeds and not diminishing the seeds, one is established as a worldly person who is separated from desire and one who is not separated from desire. Because of the seeds being cut off and diminished, and because of not being cut off and not being diminished, names are established, this is the general statement. After stating the names of the afflicted dharmas that are corresponding and non-corresponding, one should state the virtuous dharmas, therefore, it is explained in detail that there are two kinds of virtuous dharmas. Those that arise without effort are those that do not depend on effort, that is, those that are obtained merely by arising. Those that arise with effort are those that obtain special qualities without depending on arising. Therefore, it is explained in detail, "Those that arise," that is, those that are obtained merely by arising, and do not depend on other efforts, those are obtained by arising. Here, arising refers to, depending on the situation, connecting in the intermediate existence, and connecting in the existence of birth. Those that depend on the special qualities of practice, those arisings arise from practice. Because the substance of those seeds has not been diminished, here, the word "those" is related to arising without effort. For those whose roots of virtue have not been completely cut off, it is the opposite.
