Thus it is declared, thus it is said. The latter words are an explanation of the former. Rejoicing and making merry are entirely dependent on desire. To possess is to be independent. This is extensively explained. In two sutras, the word 'to possess' has no difference, but in one sutra, to possess is to be independent, while in another it is another dharma. From where does this come? Does it come from what is reasonable? Or from another sutra? The teacher Samantabhadra says that in one place, to possess is to be independent, while in another it comes from the reason of being another dharma. Only what is possessed now is suitable for independence, because it is the fruit of its owner, and by always being close in the way of enjoying as one wishes, it is understood as its independence. For the good that has not yet manifested, and the past and future unwholesome, what other independence is to be examined other than attainment? Thus it is said. Even so, the statement of what is unsuitable arises. As in the Chakravartin Sutra, because it does not possess other dharmas, it is understood as independence, and similarly, in another place, it is fully examined as another dharma. From where does it follow that possessing there does not become another dharma? What contradiction is there between reason and scripture? There is this contradiction, that the dharma of substance is impossible. The dharma of substance is that its own nature is the object of direct perception, or the object of inference through the fruit. Attainment is not apparent by its own nature, because it is not observed by direct perception. Like form and sound, etc., or like desire and hatred, etc., this is an example of dissimilar dharmas. Form, etc., are observed by the consciousnesses of the eye, etc., by their own nature, and after that, they are observed by the mind consciousness. Desire and hatred, etc., are observed only by the mind consciousness. Like the eye and ear, etc., is also the statement of being invisible. The eye, etc., because they are beyond the senses, although direct perception does not observe their own nature, from the fruit, it can be inferred that they are different from form, etc. Thus, form and ear and

Although there are attention and so on, for the blind and deaf, consciousness other than the eye and so on does not arise, but if they are separated from the blind and so on, it will arise later. Therefore, it is certain that for those who have been harmed and those who have not been harmed, the consciousness of the eye and so on does not arise, and that it will arise again, there is another cause other than form and so on. The eye and so on exist only from inference. Attainment is not manifest because one's own nature is not perceived, nor is it to be grasped by inference because the result is not perceived. Therefore, a real dharma is impossible, so it is not right. A similar example is the eye and so on. If it is said that dharmas are the cause of arising, if the arising of a thing is the result of attainment, therefore, those who have not perceived their own nature, like the eye and so on, must necessarily be from the result, and there is nothing beyond the real dharma, then it will become non-unconditioned. If it is said that attainment is the fruit of arising, therefore, there is attainment in those dharmas, if the attainment of all things is understood from the point of view of arising, then, because the unconditioned does not arise, like space, because there is no inference of attainment, it will become non-unconditioned. Which dharmas have not been attained, etc., will be explained in detail, among which those that have not been attained are those that come from combination, and those that have been attained by being free from desire. Those abandoned by the transfer of land are those that are not afflicted, those are the virtuous and the unclouded and unspecified. Those abandoned by detachment are those that are afflicted, those are also the unwholesome and the clouded. Because there is no cause of arising, how will those arise? When one dies and transfers from the upper realm to be born in the lower realm, or when one completely degenerates from detachment, because there is no attainment, the dharmas of the lower realm will not arise, and because attainment arises together, the unclouded and unspecified will not arise either. Therefore, even if there is no attainment, it is not a result because arising is seen. Therefore, there is no result.

Because the prior attainment cannot be grasped by subsequent inference, the law of substance is impossible. If it is said that it is the cause of co-emergent attainment, then, for the laws such as non-attainment, although the previously produced does not have attainment, the co-emergent does exist. Therefore, their arising, like that which is unclouded and unstated, is the cause of co-emergent attainment. Therefore, even without it, seeing arising is an unreasonable statement. If so, then the question of "at the time of arising" will arise. If the law is the cause of co-emergent attainment, then what will arise at the time of arising? Because the uncommon result of arising is only arising. If attainment arises, then what will arising do at that time? Like abiding and so on, because there is no other action for it. Therefore, a comprehensive examination of it will become meaningless. Or, it should not be admitted that all dharmas are the reason for co-emergent attainment. If arising becomes meaningless, therefore attainment arises, and arising arises dharma, if it is thought in this way, then one should say "the arising of arising," and the question of "what will it do" should be added. If attainment arises, but not the arising of arising, then the examination of similar characteristics will become meaningless. Those who possess all bonds, this is a detailed explanation. Possessing all bonds means those who have not abandoned any form of affliction. Because the difference related to attainment, there is no difference for attainment, therefore, for those who possess all bonds, the arising of small, medium, and large afflictions will not be different, because the attainment that is the cause of it has no difference. Others say that if one observes other continuums, then attainment has no difference. Just like this, the attainment of all those who possess all bonds is the same, starting from the attainment of those with the smallest of afflictions being the smallest of the small.
