It is the fear that arises from considering faults. Others say that respect refers to a vast manifestation, and the fruit of respect, fear, is knowing shame, but it is not respect itself. That the two are in the desire and form realms is stated to establish their meaning definitively. Therefore, it is said that there is no joy or respect in the formless realm. If asked, what is the reason for their absence? It is because there is no basis for joy and respect, and no cause for them. The basis is the teacher and the student. Among them, the students have joy and respect for the teacher, while the teachers only have joy for the students, not respect. The cause is the combination of pure actions of body and speech, but both of these are absent in the formless realm. Therefore, there is no joy or respect. Faith and knowing shame refer to a vast manifestation, and joy and respect are the nature of faith and knowing shame. Faith and knowing shame are the foundation of many virtuous qualities, so if it is said that they are prohibited in the formless realm, it is contradictory. If this is said, then "faith is of two kinds," etc., refers to a vast manifestation. There, it is the faith and knowing shame that focus on persons that are prohibited, but not the faith and knowing shame that focus on the Dharma, so there is no contradiction. Where does this come from? It comes from the context. Joy and respect are for persons, this is the context. Therefore, it is said here that it is those joys and respects that are being considered, and it refers to the faith and knowing shame that focus on persons, but not to the faith and knowing shame that focus on the Dharma. Investigation and analysis refer to a vast manifestation. If asked, how can one mind simultaneously possess these two? Because their respective natures have not been shown, it is not another mind, and it is not possible for one mind to have both coarseness and subtlety, because they are mutually contradictory. If this is asked, some say, etc., refers to a vast manifestation. Like ghee, fresh oil poured into water, etc., "abandoned" is a synonym. Because of the connection between investigation, analysis, and subsequent events, the mind will not become too coarse or too subtle, this is the similarity between the metaphor and the meaning. Nor will it be too cold.

The so-called "earth" will not become very hard. What is very difficult to digest will not become very easy to melt. Just as saying that the "very" in the essence of those things does not refer to the self-nature of roughness and tranquility. If it is said that "seeking" and "examining" are the coarseness and fineness of the mind, this is only explained from the perspective of function, not from the perspective of self-nature, which is admitted. Therefore, it will not fall into the fault of "becoming a reason." Just as it is said in the Sutra Pitaka, no matter what kind of consciousness, whether it is coarse or subtle. Therefore, if there is a certain dharma that can cause the mind to arise in a coarse state, that is seeking; if there is a certain dharma that can cause the mind to arise in a subtle state, that is examining. Even so, it is unreasonable for one mind to have both coarse and subtle states at the same time, because they contradict each other. The master Sangharakshita said that it does not refer to one mind, although the substance is the same, but because the time of the forces is different, there is no contradiction. In the assembly, if the power of seeking increases, then the power of examining will weaken, and the mind will become coarse; if the power of examining increases, then the power of seeking will weaken, and the mind will become subtle, just like hot and cold water, each one or two. Here, the side with the stronger power is like heat, and the side with the smaller share is like water, so this metaphor is not inappropriate. Therefore, some say that seeking and examining exist simultaneously, and the coarse mind itself is not subtle. Coarseness and subtlety arise due to the difference between earth and aspect. Among them, due to the difference of earth, the manifested object is larger, so relative to the first dhyana, the desire realm is coarse; because the object is smaller, relative to the desire realm, the first dhyana is subtle and very tranquil. Similarly, relative to the second dhyana, the first dhyana is coarse; the second dhyana is subtle relative to the first dhyana. It should be described in the same way up to the peak of existence. Due to the difference of aspect, even on the same ground, it can be divided into small, medium, and large, and then divided into smaller, and so on. Therefore, seeking and examining will continue to exist until the peak of existence. Due to the difference of earth, there is only seeking in the desire realm, and there is
