It is like gold that has been purified by washing with water and hammering. The sutra says: 'What is very subdued, what are the categories that become limbs of enlightenment?' There is also a very subdued body, and there is also a very subdued mind. Whatever is a very subdued body, that very subdued and perfect limb of enlightenment will also become manifest knowledge, perfect enlightenment, and nirvana. Whatever is a very subdued mind, that very subdued and perfect limb of enlightenment will also become manifest knowledge, perfect enlightenment, and nirvana.' Isn't it also said that the body is very subdued? Here it is said that only the mind being capable is very subdued, then isn't the definition of very subdued not pervasive? If you ask this, the sutra does not say that it is not so. That is because the feeling of the body is like this, and the mind is also produced depending on the colored root, and it is the same as the eye consciousness and so on. Just as the body is spoken of in this way, so too should the very subdued body be understood, and the mind is also produced depending on the colored root, and it is the same as the five consciousnesses, and it is called the body. That is also because the good dharmas of eye consciousness and so on are all capable by nature, because very subdued is of many grounds. Then there is no difference in essence between the very subdued body and mind, so the definition is pervasive, not non-pervasive. How can that become a limb of enlightenment? Because eye consciousness and so on are not equally abiding, and because the limbs of enlightenment are without outflows, isn't the very subdued that is the same as eye consciousness and so on able to become a limb of enlightenment? If you ask this, then in that sutra, the difference produced by the body being capable is only led by joy, and it should be known that the body is very subdued, because the sutra says: 'The body of a joyful mind will become very subdued.' Some say that the body is of a soft nature. How can that be called a limb of enlightenment?

la. The limbs of enlightenment are mental and free from defilements. Extreme pliancy of the body is not of the nature of mind-born, and since it is with defilements, it should not be among the limbs of enlightenment, right? The Vaibhashikas say: Because it is in accordance with the limbs of enlightenment. That extreme pliancy of the body also accords with the nature of extreme pliancy of mind, which is a limb of enlightenment, so it is also called a limb of enlightenment. How does it accord? The very fitness of the body will be explained in detail. The term "such" means that although it is not its nature, it is closely associated with it because it is in accordance with it. Although it is not its nature, because joy is in accordance with the limb of perfect enlightenment, the dharmas like the abode of joy are said to be the limb of perfect enlightenment of joy. The cause of anger, the nine roots of torment, are said to be the obscuration of malice because they are in accordance with malice. When the path is made into three aggregates, then investigation and effort are said to be the aggregate of wisdom. Investigation and effort are not of the nature of wisdom, so what are they? They are of the nature of investigation and diligence. Equanimity, which is called mental evenness, is the opponent of sinking and excitement, which are not pliant. It means that the mind does not deviate from running properly, because it is said in the sutras that the mind is spontaneously accomplished. Others say that it is an obstacle to attention. This should be understood as the equanimity of formations. Feeling is the three kinds of experience, and because it is mentioned from that itself, feeling is not equanimity, and because it arises in all virtuous minds, immeasurable equanimity is also not. Because the scriptures say that there are three kinds of equanimity: feeling equanimity, formation equanimity, and immeasurable equanimity, but here it is a case of many virtuous grounds, so feeling and immeasurable equanimity are not taken. Now, how will it be explained in detail, because this is a multi-ground and a virtuous multi-ground. Attention

If giving up and equanimity arise in one mind, that is also unreasonable, because they contradict each other. If someone asks: Is the difference between these difficult to know? The answer is: Knowing through suffering is difficult to know. It is also said extensively that what, like contact and feeling, does not contradict other phenomena arising from the mind in a single moment of consciousness, is difficult to know, but it is also knowing. If effort and non-effort contradict each other, and arising in one does not contradict, this is very difficult to know, because happiness and suffering are not seen to arise in one mind. Effort also arises in others, and this is said extensively, because it is another phenomenon, so effort itself is not non-effort, and those two are not present in one object. When effort is applied to form, at that time there is no effort for sound, etc., so what contradiction is there in this? If someone asks: Then I, etc., effort and non-effort, because the objects are different, if all that are in accordance are not one object, then it is also thought that the objects of accordance are not different, because accordance is promised by the sameness of the object. From this there is such a kind, like conceptualization and analysis, which are contradictory but not contradictory kinds, because coarse and subtle contradict each other. Non-contradiction is because it arises in one mind. What is the reason for that, that for this, it is thought to exist under different names.
