In order to refute the view of annihilationists, it is said that the past exists. In order to refute the view of denying retribution, it is said that the future exists. The past has already occurred, and the future will occur, it should be said like this, but it is said "exists," because the word "exists" is a copula in the sentence. The copula of the sentence has the nature of the three times, so it also applies to the meaning of "has already occurred" and "will occur." For example, the expansion of the word "lamp" appears, for example, it is said that the "lamp" did not exist before but now exists, and later does not exist but now exists, but in reality, it is not a substantial existence. Also, for example, it is said that the lamp has been extinguished, but it is said "I did not extinguish it," although the word "exists" is used, the state of extinction does not exist. If according to the view of the Vaibhashikas, is cessation also not existent? Although existence is true, it does not exist only in the self-nature of the lamp. Similarly, although it is not a substantial existence, it is also said that the past and the future exist. If it is not like this, the past and the future cannot be established. If it exists according to its own nature, then the past and the future themselves cannot be established. If the past is something that happened earlier, then the Blessed One extensively said to the wanderers, staff-bearers, and matted-hair wearers, in the topic of the noble ones, in the sutra spoken by the Buddha of Nalanda, in the Vinaya that is fully equipped, it is mentioned that the son of Maudgalyayana was killed, and the wanderers, staff-bearers, and matted-hair wearers said that there was no such killing. Therefore, the sutra extensively says that the wanderers, staff-bearers, and matted-hair wearers who commit the five heinous crimes say that the past does not exist. Do those wanderers, staff-bearers, and matted-hair wearers not think that the five heinous crimes happened earlier? It is said like this, they think that it happened earlier, but nevertheless, they say that the past does not exist.

Therefore, for that place, it is mistakenly thought that it does not exist in essence. Thus, the Blessed One extensively said that for any essence, those past actions that are wrongly perceived do exist. Therefore, it is explained in detail that past actions have their own essence. From that sutra, it is understood that past actions are merely the actions that occurred previously, and it is not said that the action exists because of that. What then? Because that action is completely guided by it in the continuum, the action that occurred previously guides and establishes, having the power to produce results, so it is said from that perspective. If asked, what will be revealed by saying this intention? It is not so, if only its own essence exists, the past action will not be established. If it is said that that action exists in its own characteristics and exists in the characteristics of what is happening now, then the past action will not be established, only what is happening now will be established. This is how it is thought. If it is explained in detail that that action is completely guided by it in the continuum, then it will be established that the past action exists. Without a doubt, it should be known that it is like that, just as it is said that past and future actions do not exist in essence. If the phrase "in the present time" appears in detail, then this is a synonym for "appearing from what has not appeared in the present essence." This is not possible, because time is not something different from things. The meaning of saying "because time is not something different from things" is that it is not so, the time that is happening now is not something different from the thing called "eye." It means that it is not a different essence. If the present time is the thing itself, then how can it appear from what has not appeared in its own present essence? Just like this, it itself is the basis of time and talk. If it is said that it appears from what has not appeared in the essence of the eye, then the statement "there is no future eye" is established. In the phrase "it is only an object," the word "only" is to exclude the action of producing, and I think that dharmas exist as the object of its manifestation. The future will appear after a thousand kalpas.
