It is for the sake of attachment. If it is not necessary to discriminate, if it is not inverted, then what is said in the sutra, how is it? Perception is also not necessarily discriminating, and mind is also not necessarily discriminating. It is said that there are twelve inversions, because each of the four inversions has perception, mind, and view inversions. How is it? Starting from "the thought of permanence in impermanence," it is widely said up to "the thought of self in selflessness." It is said that there are three inversions of perception, mind, and view that arise from the thought of happiness in suffering, and these three that arise from the thought of purity in impurity, up to these three that arise from the thought of self in selflessness. Among them, eight are to be abandoned by seeing, that is, the three inversions of perception, mind, and view that arise from the thought of permanence in impermanence, and the three that arise from the thought of self in selflessness, the view inversion that arises from the thought of happiness in suffering, and the view inversion that arises from the thought of purity in impurity. Four are to be abandoned by cultivation. Which ones? It is said which ones arise from perception and inversion in suffering and impurity, that is, the two inversions of perception and mind that arise from the thought of happiness in suffering, and the perception and mind that arise from the thought of purity in impurity are also two, a total of four. The noble one who is not separated from desire refers to the stream-enterer and the once-returner. Why are these not considered inversions? Because the perception of sentient beings arises universally, and the mind that arises from the thought of sentient beings, why are these not considered perceptions? Why are the perceptions and mind inversions that are related to sentient beings not considered? Why is the self-inversion not considered? This is how it is thought. Why? It is said that if the thought of sentient beings does not arise for women and me, then desire cannot arise. Therefore, these perception and mind inversions that arise from the thought of self in selflessness are also to be abandoned by cultivation, so it is said.

It has become like this. Because it is said to explain in detail, it should be connected like this: thinking that suffering is happiness, thinking that impurity is purity, and even thinking that no-self is self, these inverted perceptions, inverted minds, and inverted views are to be eliminated. Therefore, only the perceptions and minds that are aroused by views and correspond to views are inverted, and others are not. That is to say, those that do not correspond to views are not inverted. This is the conclusion. Although there are such confusions of perception and mind, because they are not aroused by views, they are not inverted, it is said. Why? Because that is only a temporary confusion. It is mentioned that it is only a temporary confusion when seeing a woman. This is the conclusion. Therefore, the noble ones, at that time, only because of the confusion of seeing in that way, is it a wrong understanding, just like the confusion about the fire wheel and the yaksha in the picture. For example, when the fire wheel rotates rapidly, it is only at that moment that the illusion of being a wheel arises, and it is not so afterwards. Seeing the yaksha in the picture, at that moment, the illusion of being a yaksha arises, and it is not so afterwards, it is the same as that. Because the noble ones have a definite understanding of these, whether it is the illusion of happiness or purity, or the illusion of sentient beings, it is only temporary. These are not inverted, because the Blessed One said, monks, for the noble hearers, those who have heard, there may be a little loss of mindfulness, but it will soon disappear, be completely exhausted, and completely ended. If the confusion of thought and mind is not inverted, then some others who hold a third view will say: Then, Venerable Ananda... In detail, the noble Lord of Speech said to Venerable Ananda: Because of the defilement of desire, my heart feels pain. Gautama, because of your compassion, please tell me the excellence of tranquility. After saying this, for the sake of the noble Ananda, the inverted perception
